Show a bit of charity, you may as well give it away as plough it in!

Work out the costings between short term more intensive cattle v very long term extensive cattle and you will find it properly costed the very long term low input cattle will cost as much to rear as short term cattle intensive farmed and of course with the latter you will be turning them around a lot quicker so will be getting a better return on your money invested in actual cattle purchase costs.

Ie you make £1700 of a 18 month old prime steer or keep it to 30 months and make £1600, will have been on the farm an extra 12 months and ends up making less or no more than the steer that went down the road 12 months ago! one has been on farm 9 months and one has been on farm for 21 months....
This this and this imo

I still have a herd of plastic herefords from 1978 .
My youngster got some Britain’s ones last year, now if ever there is a breed gone down in quality it’s the Britain’s Hereford. I had a canny herd of them in the early 80’s, far superior cattle to those of today. They don’t even ring the bulls nowadays..

These 280 to 350 kilo cattle are well worth buying in my book. Oodles of grass about round here and once you get to August all they need is sun ,shade and water to take them through to the Autumn sales .......and a bit of luck ! ........
its the bit of luck is the hard bit

I wouldnt worry tbh, beef price will rise and folks will carry on doing/buying what they usually do. Stock not making decent money atm arent the best of stock
Not necessarily so,the finished price is not going to rise for 6 weeks or so.Too many short killing weeks and a 3 day week to come, may even drop a penny or two.Finishing cattle cannot really add up at the moment, talk of cereals going even higher,so £5/kilo aint going to work either. It will all find a level eventually but i really fear it will be too late for most suckler herds.

But Guth said in post 98462 that heifers in Sedge that were heavier than the ones I bought yesterday were £450 ......mine were £600 .......surely that's bad luck 😑😑

I doubt the £450, but if so they were a bargain. I bought AA heifers (reg sire) this week for just over £600 10 to 12 months and I thought they were sensible as grazed well for the summer they will be 450 kg by the Autumn and should be over £900 if things stay as they are.
