Food Banks Whats Going On?

Mothers always worked, apart from in some weird, middle class rose-tinted view of yesteryear.
My father was not middle class either , he came from utter poverty where his mother worked three jobs to survive nothing more , his father died when he was a small boy and evacuated several times . So nonmiddle class or rose tinted glasses here sonny just the truth but thats out of fashion these days .

Is not the truth though is it? Women always worked, mortgages were irrelevant for most people.

People live above there means, can't cook won't cook, can be arsed to to cook, have absolutely no incentive to save money if they're able to and now it's coming back to bite them. I do however acknowledge there are some genuine cases where people are hard up & need help but I'm guessing a large majority have themselves to blame for the position they now find themselves in & instead of taking responsibility expect others (government) to bail them out. And any politician who publicly said this would be expected to resign in the modern day woke world we live in.

Just arse holes , they have more thsn forty quid they just have their priority’s arse about tit .

Get you heads out of your arses. You have nothing to suggest what you say is true.

An interesting point of note was that my local supermarket "deposit food here" thingy had more dog and cat food in it than food for people during my weekly shop last Friday.

I dread to think what the cost of owning and maintaining a per are now.

Govt wasted 9.9 Billion (thats 9.9 thousand million) on unuseable PPE in the pandemic, 4.5 million to help some migrants is a drop in he ocean compared to the money govt are giving away to their mates
and everybody was shouting at them, for not getting the ppe, so created a mad dash, to get some, when many countries were trying as well. A lot of money was made during covid, and all guvs were chasing it, so mistakes were made. What we didn't hear, is why it wasn't suitable, before to much criticism, would like the answer, might be jobsworths civil servants, being exact, rather than a degree of flexibility.

But you weren't taught how to cook at school were you ? I can cook but its from my Mum and my own enthusiasm. many people now just aren't interested on making their own meals when there is deliveroo.
I was the last year in school where ,boys did woodwork and metalwork and girls sewing and cooking. I was never taught to cook, however when I got divorced I was forced to learn, and when I grew up my family always cooked from scratch (and usually from the garden where possible), so I was surprised at how much I had just absorbed from them. Always fresh fish on Wed (market day), roast or casserole on a Sunday etc. I think the problem isn't the mechanics of cooking, it is learning the attitude of being able to cook from ingredients rather than a packet that we as a country have lost.

There but for the grace of God! I don't mean in a literal sense just that life is more complicated. Mention above of people having children they cannot afford and yes there are folk that perhaps should think about how they are going to pay for them, but there are many more who find themselves left holding the baby when the love of their life fecks off. If you are working and getting on fine and then you suddenly become ill the bills still need paying and I am not talking about Sky et al, just the basics, food, heat, shoes etc. Most of us on here are worried about how we are going to feed our cows in the winter, not our children. I know people who have used a food bank and they are mortified by it. One is a young single mum ( wasn't single to start with ), full time job that paid just enough extra to be able to pay another young mum to look after her child and keep them both off benefits. An estimated electric bill came in saying that the electric company owed her over £700, she phoned them, meter got read and turns out she owed them nearly £3000 (faulty meter ). She got into debt to try to pay what she supposedly owed and even though she was refunded what she payed it did not cover the debts she had incurred. That was why she needed to use a foodbank.
The country has a problem too, with too few children being born, maybe we need to applaud the single mothers with lots of children! Just make sure they grow up to be good members of society.

Awesome, so we are prepared to straw-clutch to attempt to justify the utter incompetence of 9.9billion pounds of waste, but a fraction of that on migrants is entirely wrong.

Nice priorities there

I was taught because my (feminist) mother did not want to see a generation of boys like my dad's generation, who largely appear to be able to do little more than fry an egg. They both worked and she felt they should therefore both contribute to the daily chores.

Turns out I quite enjoy cooking. I was a "latch key" kid, so often cooked dinner anyway.

The same cannot be said of the other things she taught me (mending/sewing, cleaning, washing), but I do them anyway.

Because it was some shite, not up to spec stuff that one of their mates bought cheap without checking and thought they'd shift for a few billion. It's called cronyism.

No I wouldn't.

The farm I lambed on the last 2 years has been taken back in hand by the estate following a long time tenant retiring. Reportedly, the steading is £8k pa on a 5 yr FBT, with the 100 acre grassland on an annual licence at £100/ac.

That's why my sheep are now on summer tack on the isle of wight.

I can't afford to do anymore charity work for landowners. If I don't find the right land opportunity I may well be doing something else next year.

So what you need is a big estate somewhere to say here is 1500 acres of cover crops, please graze your sheep on them and pay us some money?

A miniscule sum to help those that flee war and pestilence.

It may be a miniscule sum but don't let me hear about a shortage of care home places, or people waiting 2 years for a hip replacement.

People fleeing war and pestilence should take refuge in the nearest available country and temporarily until it is safe to return. Not be flown 3000 miles never to return.

The UK pays large amounts of money into the international aid system. Big money with a capital B.

In the press the other day (so it must be true) UK consumer spends the least amount on food as any other european country. Not sure what’s going on. Have we a higher percentage in poverty or just greater expectation such as phones, cigarettes etc.? Wife works in a small village school in a nice area of the Cotswolds and the amount of neglected children is incredible
It is true.
Go to a French supermarket and look at the veg prices. A cauliflower will be 1.50, carrots 2 euros. Aldi do them at Xmas for 19p
We have the cheapest food in the world.
My workman (60) talks about how he was one of 5 boys and in the early 70s they used to eat 2 bags (50kg) of spuds per week. His parents used to get the split spuds off my dad and feed the family with them.
They would also eat marrow every day when in season, stuffed.
basically the mother made sure they were well fed, which would be quite a challenge for 5 growing boys
