Sometimes these firms seem to get themselves away up in a higher authority than they maybe should be
A lot of them are only buying products from one farmer and selling them back to another that’s all
Big meeting in the Midlands years ago held by one of the big feed compounders. They were telling farmers what they would HAVE too pay and how they were lucky too have the compounder. Grandad stood up and told them they wouldn't be worth shite if it wasnt for the family farmers who tighten belts and carry on when the job is sour. That lot couldnt manage 3 months on tight profits and stormed out. UNcle was with him and said he'd never been so embarrassed! Next morning 3 staff members from the compounders were in our yard trying to talk him around to carrying on buying their feed. Grandad ordered them out and we never bought another load. he kept fairish of pigs bcak then as well as the sheep, using fairish of corn. The corn firm went bust big style within 12 months...

Somebody has to breed stock or there are going to be alot of empty farms, markets and shelves
Cannot get a price for deadweight lambs next week as the slaughter company's are expecting lamb prices to drop sharply on Monday morning in livestock markets!

Prices are already £10/20 head less than 12 months ago + add on £30 head in increased input prices per lamb on 12 months ago so at least £40 head less in real terms on 12 months ago so its quite clear what is very likely going to happen within 12/18/24 months from now if they carry on trying to force farm gate prices downwards!

our local independent corn mill was saying last week that barley is £312 on farm now and wheat-feed in Liverpool was over £300. it was the wheatfeed upsetting him the most as its £300 for what is basically filler!
Drover told me today his grain buyer had called his dad this week and wil pay £340 ton for Barley ex combine as long as they can supply it by the 10th of July!

Basically they are literally going to run out of grain unless its a very early harvest, well they only have themselves to blame for the shortage as they have been driving UK grain prices well below what they should have been the last few years!

Its almost like its the fashion not to like the suckler cow anymore, they aint cash cows but they aint that bad either.
of all the cattle, sucklers will be the last too leave here. I can feed a cow a long way when good rearing calves are £300-350 and milk is £50+ a bag. and after all that you still get an animal that wont grade/weigh like a suckler bred.

I don’t know much about it but from what I gather it’s a bit like printing money when it’s going right but when it’s not the money can be going out as fast as it was coming in
As said many a time before at least cattle and sheep can be turned out onto grass part of the year
Friend of grandads over on the east coast keeps thousands of laying hens. last time he was over here he'd just had another shed passed and he'd be over 100 000 hens on site. he reckons that if he's in profit 2 months of the year he makes that much profit that for the other 10 if he just breaks even he's doing very nicely. Wether this recent silliness has upset all that I dont know.

Yes I think our resilience sometimes gives our supply companies a bit of a free hand with what they charge ect
It’s often talked about how much money is made out of farming rather than farming itself
Iv always said mole valley slogan "Its a way of life" is used so they can shaft us, make us think that we don't need to make money because its a way of life and not a business.

Hope the same happens with beef and lamb

This is what happens when hogg prices aren’t good enough….there’s not enough money to reinvest in the business

Generally from what I’ve heard there’s been a lot less cake sold and a lot less fert.
Personally we’ve fed the same to everything that’s being sold prime or store a bit less cake for ewes (that’s probably due to milder winter) and half the fert up to now.
There’s storage sheds brim full of fert in Cumbria which is usually emptied by now
Looking like production is decreasing
