He’s a good shearer nice tidy job making it look easy
Hes been coming here years now, very good shearer.

My brother is a hoof trimmer and sheared with me for the last 10 years. Gave it up this year and says even the thought of it makes his back twinge. The result is very busy season ahead for me on my own. Big tallies are needed!

Clipping finished for the year, 3 texel tups, 5 NZ Suffolk done.
300 mules going to market unclipped over the next 4 weeks and the Easycares clipped themselves.

Tups were done on Monday
60 sucking hoggs (and the odd older/poorer ewe destined for cull after weaning) done today.
Good going, actually better than I expected - even the poor old girls. 1 I thought would be hell to do, but even she shore fine once I was into it. I'm doing 90 for a neighbour on Friday... then my 130 dry hoggs and 160 of nlthe neighbours ewes at grass parks next week

Moving on down here, did my commercials last week which went really well. Still some sticky ones not ready yet but on the whole going ok- hopefully be wrapped up in a couple of weeks as thoughts turn to hay and haylage weather permitting..
These were the last little lot from yesterday, a small mixed bag of breeds, done in a stable while it persisted down outside.

Been wet and forecast more showers so not many will be done around here for a bit. Glad I made the effort to do some small lots on Thursday (even though apparently it was a bank holiday).
I haven’t shorn a sheep for 10 days, silaging and since then it’s been wet.
Done the easy ones first, 8 tups and teasers. Beautiful fleeces that came off easily with no fighting from them. Started on a few mules, they were open on their backs but tight and greasy down their sides and legs so gave up on them. Caught a few hoggets and did them (just to see how big they were under all that wool)...they sheared lovely...mules and welshies...plump too.

Doing 160 ewes tomorrow, then 130 dry hoggs on Wednesday
Hoggs will be fine, they're mine - some are bare belly
and a few are peeling on the neck... some are wool everywhere though to even it up
Hoping the ewes are decent shearing, they're scotch mules (neighbours) running a large area on decent upland grass - but they'll be BIG (always are)

The ewes were ok today. Most were decent but some a bit matted/dry and not the nicest... started out a nice size but got bigger towards the end. There was nothing that could be considered thin anyway

Clipped 240 hoggs on Saturday. Very good going. Sheep in tremendous fettle. 6 full sheets of wool, probably 15% more wool than last year off the same number

130 Hoggs done today. Most were good shearing, some would have been better with another couple days of real heat - but none were too dry/sticky...
The open necks and clear bellies were a bit too few and far between at times
Most were a nice size, nothing too big but the whole lot had a will to wriggle - typical hoggs, but my ones usually sit pretty well. Don't think they appreciated being in a shed with no water last night
Neighbours son who is just learning to shear I'm half teaching/watching over - I'd guess doing 10-12 per hour, his dad who isn't a great shearer (in very good sheep I can do 2-2.5 ewes to his 1, but I wasn't at that pace today) and me... wish I had my tally counter so I knew how many I was doing myself, but between the 3 of us we were doing around 60 an hour.
290 done last 2 days. Not sure if I'll get many more this week, it's wet today and forecast for tomorrow and Friday isn't looking good
