Pheasant poults

Game farms have been severely hit by the French export ban on pheasant and partridge eggs and poults due to avian flue, which has badly hit the area in France where most of the main gamebird suppliers are based. Apparently about 50% of low ground birds released each year in the UK are from eggs sourced from France and a lot of shoots are struggling to source poults.

According to the Game Farmers Association in a normal year roughly 20 million pheasants and 10 million partridges are imported from France and instead of the normal 5-15p increase in the price of poults, this year it will be more likely 50-60p, before you add in increased labour and feed costs.

You’ll be doing well to get anything at all now.
I heard of partridge at £18 the other day.
Not sure if it’s a case of Chinese whispers or not.

There are rumours of over £15/bird. A lot of those who thought they’d secured uk reared poults around £5 will be let down as game farms say hatching rates are down but in fact sell them at a higher price elsewhere. Luckily for us, those who rear ours for the little farm shoot are loyal and proud of repeat custom.

A friend said yesterday, his game supplier rang a fortnight ago and said, that everything was back to normal as French were now releasing for export, and full order would be delivered.

Friend said earlier this week supplier rang and said, all off as Defra has blocked imports. I can't find anything regarding Defra ban during last couple of weeks, has anyone else seen anything?

Wondering if friend as been 'gazumped'.

I fear our supplier....who has been reliable for 10 yrs may have been tempted by the premium prices being offered by some 'wealthier than us' shoots . Ours were secure ....until suddenly they weren't !
We didn't mind a price rise but extortion was out of the question !
Similar problem here, shoot was promised at least some birds from local supplier then give back word! Drilled most of the game plots with spring barley now.
Big estate shoot we drill covers for is still going ahead I believe but with a reduced number of days.
