Why hasnt more been done? how many more people, young children are to be killed, mauled by dogs, a few years ago when this did come to light i thought laws were put into place to ban the keeping, breeding importing, sale of certain dogs, so why in the last couple of months do we here of two children at least? being mauled to death and now a man? Instead of worring about the other worlds problems, lets tackle some of the uks ?

Where do you start, not all big nasty looking dogs are dangerous, a collie can can easily turn as many folks on here have found out the hard way when one has bitten their kids .
I've got a chihuahua but I value my fingers ,,she's possessive, defensive and not frightened of anything .
Staffies get bad rep but its all down to how they are treated .
Few years ago ,a St Bernard savaged its owner .
Any dog, breed or size can turn nasty .

We should go back to having a license to keep dogs, renewable annually. Any problems that license is revoked. To have a child mauled to death by a dog is one of the most horrific deaths possible and so avoidable.
But there's a certain percentage of society that don't care about any laws , dog licences would be the last thing on the list of priorities,,they just breed for money and are not interested how that pup turns out.

but ? the fashion? or look is to have a certain type of dog? these pit bull type dogs? Or am i wasting my time trying to to talk about this? we never had this happen so often years ago? or never ever heard of this ? is it like deaths of youths, children by stabbing, just now excepted by british society as not unusual?

True but having a license gives the authorities some kind of control over them. What would you propose?

just a reason why certain man-eating dogs are seen more and more? i quote? yet in farming agriculture keeping dangerous animals such as cattle in fields were the public roam? is in the news and people have been fined? new rules regulations for that? But certain man-eating dogs? what about a man-eating tiger on a lead ? Some serious common sense is urgently in order? if people are found to own or have in their control? man-eating? dogs, zero tolerance by society or what?

Not just dangerous breeds , some breeds no longer capable of being viable without veterinary intervention ; Cavalier King Charles spaniels with cranium space issues, French Pugs with breathing difficulties

And don't get me on to obese pets in general

Sadly, there is a nation wide ignorance about the nature of dogs here in the UK -- as illustrated here. Nothing unusual about that.

I bought my first dog at a cattle market at the age of 14 for one shilling (5p) and went home to face parental wrath. Five years later, I was hunting a pack of 40 hounds. Except when at college, I've always had a dog...or dogs, sometimes up to 40, all my own. When I moved here 40 years ago, I went round all my neighbours and said if they experienced any trouble with a dog of mine to come and tell me and I'd lend them a gun so they could shoot it. I had my own flock for years. So far, so good. I've written numerous magazine articles and was commissioned to write a book. I have competed and won field trials. I don't say much on here because people have engrained opinions and, frankly, I can't be bothered with the uphill struggle to educate them. Does that qualify me to know what I am talking about?

I've posted photos on here of my working German shepherd, Max, having his belly scratched and fed pieces of carrot by his best pal, a 17 year old girl. I've also posted a video of the same dog at 15 months attacking my 'helper' on command with serious intent, then being called off to lick the same man's hand when told he is 'a friend'. Dogs' minds do not work the same as humans'.

Dogs are not humans and they certainly are not children. Some breeds have inbred bite inhibition, others have been bred to bite as it's needed in the job they do. Most are trainable to some extent. Get rid of the ignorance rather than the dogs.

The TV series, "Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly", is a start. Sadly, not much is explained so people are still going to have stupid relationships with dogs. Keeping working dogs as pets is just plain stupid. Leaving young kids and dogs together unsupervised is plain stupidity. 'Playing" with dogs needs to be done with intelligence or they can get the wrong ideas. I can't think of any cure for stupidity, laws won't do it and never have. It's everywhere you look.

It's at this stage I usually delete my post and mutter "What the hell". I'm 82 and going to be dead soon and so it isn't really my problem.

Said to the wife are these attacks being reported more in the news lately but have always been this common just we didn’t know or is it more that everyone went mad for dogs in lockdown so now you have folk with them that have no clue as to look after /treat them right

There are quite simply too many dogs (I write this as someone with three himself). The more dogs there are, the more instances like this we'll see.

Another side effect of the covid response driving demand for dogs and the profitability of breeding them through the roof, leading - predictably - to all the d**ks of the day getting in on it.

I don't agree with an ownership license, but I do think there needs to be more control around breeding. I know someone who has made in excess of £90k from one bitch inside of two years. Its obscene.

Why are pugs no longer considered a ‘typical dog’?

Research carried out by the RVC has found that pugs are twice as likely to experience health disorders, compared with other dogs.
Experts have said that they ‘can no longer be considered a typical dog’ until their health issues improve.

Make breeders/re-homers responsible for consequential problems when they sell/re-home dogs and it doesn't work out. They need to be made responsible for dogs going into good knowledgeable homes, not passing on biters or sheep worriers. The £40,000 fine for sheep worrying in Scotland is a step forward....but fine the person who sold/gave the dog and the owner too.

If owners have a dog that is causing problems, they "re-home" it and pass the problem to someone else. It is no longer politically correct to put a healthy dog down. If done humanely, it makes no difference to the dog. Not a nice thought, but sometimes not nice things have to be done.

A mate messaged me the other day full of excitement. Some 'stupid man' had given him a malinois. I'm afraid I burst his bubble by telling him that so many had seen how intelligent the dogs were and how much they could be trained to do by watching TV. But when they got the dog, they soon realised they are hyperactive with little bite inhibition and the rescues were full of them. I put it as gently as I could but he has not spoken to me since and his wife is complaining about all the walking she is having to give it to keep it reasonably sane.
