Good News in the pig trade

I could rewrite the article to say: "We are now going to pay our producers a fair price for the pigs they produce, to reflect the fact that their inputs have more than doubled and they are complying with our required standards that add significantly to their cost of production over and above that of imported pig meat."

My wife read a comment on this article this morning. It said why are we supporting these farmers? They get a fortune in government subsidies, and now the supermarkets are having to subsidise them as well. 🤔
Sadly that is exactly what the BPS was designed to do. Only problem Farmers we’re not quick enough to realise the fact. A builder will be charging out Gas 24 Year Old fitters at £56.0 hour.
Now is the time to review CONTRACTS, be like a footballer employ an agent? Just have a look at xxxxxxxxx profits.
Part of the reason the ‘Industry’ is so supportive of Red Tractor is they police the Supply industry making them conform at greater cost to the producer but at no additional cost to the supply industry.
if you want a builder to modify the build it will cost you money. Any amendment to the original contact will cost you money.

A modified COP contract might be now worth looking at with bonuses if certain criteria are met. Remember you will only be kill by the low prices never by the high Prices.
If you compare some of the Egg contracts to recent Bank challenges they are somewhat similar. In the case of egg producers the contract is designed to disadvantage the producer by not allowing regular reviews. Once committed the producer has no option but to produce Irrespective of his/her costs. The industry has even been know to pay new entrant a higher price per unit because they have a new build. Somewhat cynical me thinks.

retail price has to increase surely, crazy situation for producers

supermarkets showing their true colours here

supermarkets rely on a/ producers willing to go in the expectation they'll be 'last man standing' in the expectation of good profits tomorrow and if that fails b/ some one else willing to take the place of those that do exit

why would they change a 'model' that worked?

I don't think that it is time to negotiate a cop contract right now.

My guess is that this carrot will be dangled by processors etc who see the cost of the pigs getting out of control in a free market.

We all know what happened to these cop contracts when the price went pear shaped elsewhere.
I am sad enough to occasionally watch Australian Gold Digger on TV. Their mantra seems to be set a target in grams a season, invest profits for next year season, repeat. No one seems to come away with any cash and only the Gold dealer earns money with no effort or risk.
Look at Milk contracts now they mean something. Worth a thought?

I think that is exactly what will happen. We will be held up as ungrateful idiots for not embracing their largesse. The fact remains that we now need to make a big pile to recover our losses, not a small margin that will merely enable us to service our overdrafts.

Seen much written in pig world and npa about millions extra being paid by various supermarkets just wondering if any of the various producers on here have seen any of it yet or is that the price increases we have seen over the last few months to match the rising costs of imported pork. The cynic in me wonders if some of the integrated abattoirs have pushed this extra money to there ” suppliers “ who just happened to be owned by them ( pillgrims with bop and xxxxxxxxx with there various in house production companies)

I've been getting a bit ( a few hundred£) extra each week, in a separate top up payment, from Sainsbury's via Karro. I think that it's for RSPCA Assured pigs only. Karro of course have their own production but I think that they are dividing the payment according to how many kg of pigs that you have sent rather than whose meat actually went to that retailer. I hope that the other big outfits do similar.
It's a shame that those payments don't actually feed into the SPP. (I think)

Cull sows came to over £100 each, rather a lot better than the 20 or so that they got in December.
We've a boar to go, just because we've kept his daughters back. Very little interest to sell for breeding so offered him to slaughterhouse only to be told we don't want them if you give them to us.

Yes, that is always the way with boars, even in good times they don't often get above £50 for monsters, smelly meat is the problem I think.

Trouble is, what do you do with them then?

I sent 2 with that bunch of sows the other day, they came to nothing much but at least the transport cost was diluted.

I can never bare to shoot a healthy animal myself but nearly the best method for you is to have Martins come in and shoot it and take it away?

The hunt will come and do it, but it seems such a waste of life really.
