First time spreading fertiliser

Hi

new to this so any help would be much appreciated,

spreading fertiliser for the first time in a John Deere at 540e pto. What rpm will achieve 540e on the clock? Or how many rpm is good enough to run a spreader? First time spreading , running the tractor on 540e at about 1700rpm but at one stage the rpm reached 1800rpm and the warning light came on ( due to me pressing the acceleration going uphill) Does this mean that the there’s too much speed going to the pto shaft and to reduce rpm? Also when this light come on would it do damage to the pto?

Just an over speed warning. Won’t do harm. You’ll soon get the run of it.

At least on CNH tractors in 540e PTO gear means, 540 rpm at the shaft is achieved at a little more than 1500 engine rpm. Depends on what speed you need though doubt it would do any damage to the tractor.

Tractor will be fine - it will mess up your application rates though - and when the grass / crop grows you may get rips down the field in varying growth rates / depths of green - it may amuse your neighbours / colleagues. Don’t ask me how I know !

If you're having trouble keeping the revs even on the hills, it might be worth using the standard 540 in a lower gear with more revs.

I know it will use more diesel, but the price of fert as well, you know...

Maize well when you're already driving around at 1800 RPMs.

There should be a PTO speed readout on the dash.

Advice - if you're gunna ask what engine rpms equates to 540 at the shaft, TELL US WHAT TRACTOR .

Lucky enough it’s only grazing ground won’t try crops just yet

If its a premium , cycle thro the dash display with the flipper. If its an SE, pto speeds are marked on the tachometer.

The orange warming lamp flashes at 600rpm pto, so you were close

You would only need it on 1500-1600 on 540 so probably 1200rpm would be fine 540e. You can pretty much listen to the spreader to hear the sweet spot for somewhere nr spreader speed, if it sounds like its vibrating and going to take off then the revs are too high!
