Thefts of spare wheels from vehicles

How common are thefts of underhung spare wheels ? I have my spare on the floor in the tub where it gets in the way but have been advised by a garage that the underhung ones don't stay long on the vehicle, is this true ?

If they can get the one of a navara easily then good luck to them ,,I hope I never have to use mine , the performance of finding the winding handle ,getting it in the slot then scrabling underneath to unhook it is a nightmare
But 3 minutes with a cordless grinder does away with the need to use a winding handle - best thing is to make the spare undesirable by only putting borderline legal tyre on 😉

Land Rover do an "anti theft" rotating tube over their spare wheel cable for Disco 3 and 4 now. At least in these models you have to be inside them to lower the spare, unlike pickups where the spare can be lowered from the outside.

Mine is fairly new and the first thing I thought was when this gets old and rusty the spare isn't going to be coming off in a hurry. The "key" will need welding in place.
On my older Vivaro I had to cut the cradle off to get the spare out.

We don't have a Defender any more, but when we did, we never left the wheel on the rear door, it was always in the back of the cab. Bloomin' nuisance as it took up so much room, but better than getting it knicked.

One day, using the Transit farm van, I made the regular 42 mile commute between the home base and the lowland farm in Anglesey including a significant stretch of the high speed dual carriageway A55.
Next day I set out up the cwm to visit a neighbour and a few hundred yards into my journey there was a crash and a bang and the rear of the van leaped up and sideways just missing the wall. Shaken, I got out to investigate and found the spare had fallen off, tipped up and lifted the back end. I still have a cold shudder thinking what would have happened if it had let go the day before!

The spare wheel on my L200 mysteriously disappeared last month, the chain system is still there but no wheel. As others have said, it is such a pain to remove with the rod that it is hard to believe that it just dropped off.
