Oh you should have said .....
Oh you should have said .....
It’s worrying how few sheep there are up here… thousands and thousands of acres with hardly a sheep/100 acre. And I think that’s being generous…. Could be more like 1:200
have seen some nice blackie sheep and some cracking char x calves on very hill looking cows! Credit too the farmers up here.
Funnily enough… it turns out the councils land agent that was showing us round I was actually quite good friends with at Newton rigg 13 years ago, bloody small world… maybe for once I’ll be that person that knew the land agent and had it before anybody else had even put there application in@Mc115reed needs to put £10 in the top pocket of all the council people and NOT call them pansies because they need him more than he needs them.
That’s a great story! Bet you’ll miss that vicar when he retires!10 years would be preferable…
very nice old boy died 3/4 years ago over the back. He was half an hour late for everything all his life. At the church the vicar started the ceremony with no coffin, then stopped a few minutes in as they carried in the coffin. “We thought it appropriate that Alan should be late today, every Sunday he would sidle in during the first hymn and be snoring loudly by the second one”
You mean you turned up at the land agents office in red trousers, a schoffel gillet furnished with a stuffed brown envelope?Tendering opened the door to an opportunity of a farm without having to do a competitive tender. Impressing landlords and their agents sufficiently made that possible, I fear we'd still have been looking otherwise.
Best of luck pal I hope you get a start. Pretty confident I won’t get it because the agent who I went college with said the council were hoping to find somebody wanting too do dairy on the place… but not sure how that can be viable… he said they’re not willing too spend any money on the infrastructure it is how it is now and it’s got a 6 stall parlour off Noah’s ark and a dairy that looks to me like half its missing…Best of luck pal I hope you get a start. Think there’s grants to be had maybe they are needing a tenant to fettle the place up with grants and dairyPretty confident I won’t get it because the agent who I went college with said the council were hoping to find somebody wanting too do dairy on the place… but not sure how that can be viable… he said they’re not willing too spend any money on the infrastructure it is how it is now and it’s got a 6 stall parlour off Noah’s ark and a dairy that looks to me like half its missing…
Down south hiy !Where's up here?
Carlisle ?Took these today mixed bag top £1365 bottom £910 averaged £1169 very happy with that
There’s a lot needed too fettle the place up, the general infrastructure is relatively good,. Plenty gates that swing, gate posts, yarding, sheds look in good nick apart from 2 home built sheds which I’d probably flatten… there’s a more modern cubicle shed which I’d turn too loose cattle housing but the cubicles wouldn’t take much removing tbf… apart from that the main problems are in the land… the place is riddled with docks and thistles, they’ve silage it all last week but you can see the old stalks in the bottom… there’s 3metres of thistles and nettles round the outside of every field… the hedges look like they’ve not been cut for yearsThink there’s grants to be had maybe they are needing a tenant to fettle the place up with grants and dairy
YesCarlisle ?
Don’t worry too much about the docks and thistles. You can get rid of them fairly easily. Best bit about docks is they follow nutrition so soil can’t be too bad must be growy land. There’s a lot needed too fettle the place up, the general infrastructure is relatively good,. They did say they’re hoping too have a tenant selected by end of July and successful applicant will be allowed in straight away to do any prep work needed for winter, so I’d rip half up and put stubble turnips in, then follow them with spring batley/ undersown grass and maize too try and get a lot of it under control straight away…Don’t worry too much about the docks and thistles. Been thinking which is dangerous I know. Most folks I know have half of last year’s silage left and selling cows. If these cull prices keep going then who is going to afford any breeding stock to farm? Cattle prices are a bit stagnant due to feed costs but they are still talking of a shortage all round. Can’t be many spare sheep about eitherIt’s worrying how few sheep there are up here… thousands and thousands of acres with hardly a sheep/100 acre. And I think that’s being generous….
