Disco D4 engine breaking in a new engine

So what your saying to me is this new engine won’t give in due to crank failure?
That’d be one hell of a weight off my mind

How on earth did they discover that and also not sooner…?
There is a guy who lives in my village who was a Director of JLR (now retired in his 50’s!) who would dress up as a JLR worker to see what was going on on the shop floor. His task was to find out why some of the Lion 6 engines were giving problems with Big-end Shells rotating causing engine seizure, or the crank would split
He went to the plant that grinds the cranks after casting and discovered the chap who was applying up to 250% more power to the straightening tool than PSA had recommended. This is what was causing the occasional crank shaft failure and it to split.
Not all the cranks needed much, if any straightening. Which explains why most are no trouble at all, but some are flawed. This is probably why LR replaced yours as a good will gesture. They knew the cause was their fault.

It’s not high torque at low revs which kills the crank - there was a manufacturing fault, and LR issued a TSB Bulletin, the crank shaft span the bearing journals cutting off the oil supply to the crank. Allegedly now rectified by tabs.

there are other versions on the internet of this document - see this

We have got a 2016 one that went at 30k. Interested in this as the new engine is coming up to that again! Will look at the engine number tomorrow, but as it was replaced in 2018 hopefully it will be ok?!
Looked at mine earlier, my engine number after the large second number mine starts 1002

Car back 500 miles in it no problem. Kept load light and under 2K revs, no towing and no full throttle.

Oil change to do 5W40C3 ordered up. What's plan next then.... Can I drive a little more normally now and when should it be starting to tow ect?

Modern engines don't require much running in due to the materials being used. However, best advice is to let it heat up slowly (avoid high revs until hot). I must admit, every new vehicle I've owned has been thrashed from day 1 and have all been serviced regularly and I've never had an engine problem.

The 304DT is not a "normal" engine.

Change the oil between now and 1000miles.

The most important factor is make sure it's fully warmed up before loading it and revving it, let it cool off at idle before shut down after being worked, and change the oil 5-8000 mile intervals with the 5w40 c3.

If theses inherent problems with some cranks as detailed above you could do what you like and it won’t matter, it would still fail if you changes oil every 500 miles, I would just run it as normal you will be fine, just have faith!

Same with modern oils I’ve dismantled very high mileage engines with barely and detectable ware on the blocks from piston rings and that was 10 years ago!!!

Get an oil sucker that goes down the dipstick and change the oil twice a year but only change the filter once a year, it’s an absolute doddle, you can change the oil in less than 10 mins.
