Short disc for reseeding old leys

As a bit of an aside, does anyone else find their short discs leave a grip on one side and a heap on the other?

With greenstar we work it in lands so usually filling in the grip, but still find it a bit of a pain. Is there anything that can be done to minimise it?
Ours leaves a slight hollow on the right so keep the worked ground on your left and it fills in level a bit like ploughing

I know that’s the right way to do it probably. But I want to go straight back to grass. As we lamb several ewes outdoors in the spring so I want every acre to carry as many as possible. My spring seeds never get worth anything til late June normally. By then I’ve missed the boat.
Grass to grass can be a hard thing to achieve, maybe spray and direct drill a short term grass, then same as Kev is suggesting then work that with a short disc into permanent.

We have got one for reseeding ground that's too Rocky to plough but as said above, first pass into an old sward will be the biggest feckin mess you'll have ever seen. Another few passes and all of a sudden it comes good but it would be better
if the mat gets broken up by a crop of roots first.

how many stones after the discs

Farmer Phil doing a bit of discing here with this 170 demo Kubota and a decent heavy disc

you can listen his commentary of how he gets on with 170hp on a heavy disc

Had no experience of interval though I think it’s a similar hybrid
Limagrain I believe and @Great In Grass is the man in the know about it.
Winfred which is a kale x stubble turnip hybrid Quick growing and marketed by Oliver seeds 😎
Kevin did indeed supply it to me ;)

I have had a look at the specs, and it'll do me fine, especially as it won't cost me anymore dosh...

It'll throw a few more stones onto the surface than a powerharrow. Doesn't get damaged when you find a ploughbending rock under the surface,it just rides over it.

Those heavy discs are making a lovely job compared to the utter mess I made last year!

He's on about fuel use being high at 20l/h = 5.6l/hectare, and even though the Kubota is a very heavy drinker compared to most others, that's still significantly less than I was burning.

So, does soil type and moisture content make a big difference to the finish? Or is it more down to the design of the discs themselves?

Interval is one of the highest yielding forage rapes iirc. I’m not sure if it regrows quite as well as some of the others, but that’s hardly a problem for a pioneer crop going in this late.

I started a thread on Zoom many years ago, which is an Interval/Winfred mix. You could always get some straight Winfred seed from an Olivers agent quite cheaply, and mix with that Interval seed. I’d probably put a leafy turnip in instead of the Winfred though, having seen the yield it can throw up.👍

That’s surely just a Shortdisc, not heavy discs, just a bit more distance between the gangs than some.
Mine made a similar job when I used it to chop up old turf, but does need several passes at angles, as shown in the video.

I would guess the 20L/ha is his consumption over several passes, certainly not each pass?

It works well in moist soil, like most cultivators, but is the best tool I had in rock hard clay in the Spring of 2020, when I could hardly get anything else in the ground. A plough would have brought up concrete blocks at the time!

Ours have a different disc with bigger cutouts on the outsides so it doesn’t throw as much soil out or cut in too much. You can also adjust the depth separately to the rest to get a level finish. The trash boards help as well.

I have used a Kverneland Qualdisc very good machine imo on stubbles and working down after ploughing.
Totally different compared to the discs of old we have a heavy set of Nicholsons at the farm where I grew up (same as in picture) pre power harrows coming in.
I’ve also worked down hundreds of acres for reseeds with a parmiter heavy disc a slow job compared to a P Harrow set correctly.
Cousins levelling Harrow was also a great tool on a reseed prep.
