Farming in France : 2022

I was thinking Wheat is the best bet

This is probably the type of farming where there are the least opportunities on limited capital. Arable farming requires a certain scale to be profitable and the land capable of reasonable yields was allway amongst the most expensive but has also been the type that has seen the biggest increase in value over the last couple of years.

I'm in the Haute Vienne along with many others on here. In this area I would say with a few 100k its possible to make a start in livestock farming in a large enough way to survive, that is to make a living solely from farming. At that level you might be renting some of the land. Sheep arguably require the least capital and a reasonably rapid return on investment. However you mention children and this will be a challenging life for a young family, some will relish the chance and love the life others will find it hard to adapt.

Are you a farmer now?H
Have you been married more than 5 years?
How old are your kids?
I’ve been married for 6years with 2 kids 5 and 2.

I’ve not farmed before (unless you count wacky backy when I was young lol)

No problems with your Visa as you've been married more than 5 years.
Great age for kids to move, I'm guessing your wife speaks French with them, no problems with lingo for the 5 year old for school.
Farming qualifications, I don't think, apply as long as your not asking for installation grants.( Because your wife's French)( Don't buy livestock with no experience!)
You'd need some experience to survive though.

If your wife was to work off farm you might be able to start in a small way, gain some experience and move on from there? If you've never farmed at all its a big step to move to another country and learn every thing from scratch.

Just want to run by my approach

1. Research relevant area, understand the soil, speak with other local farmers
2. Understand climate, rainfall, irrigation, historical weather,
3. Research installing borehole for water and solar pumps
4. Research suitable crops, seeds, yields, ferts, muck etc
5. Soil prep process, machinery required, what’s the minimum needed to get started
6. Create detailed business plan

If you want to get scientific about it

1 Learn some french
2 Move over and immerse yourself in france before committing to a life here
3 Attend local agricultural college this will help your french, teach you some agriculture and open the door to some very substantial young farmer grants
4 Start looking for a farm
