tractor snobbery

wish i was retired i'd love that job....trundling around not having the worry of what progress was being made or breakdowns...and getting paid....heaven

I've been to Norfolk ........ I would hate to be driving a tractor & trailer etc around those roads in peak tourist season. How anyone gets through Stiffkey in July-Sept is a mystery

Mind, it's as bad on the Sainted Isle with their caravans & Jet skis and narrow lanes. AND all the old people who are too stiff to turn around to reverse and cannot see their mirrors properly or comprehend which way to turn the steering wheel

so would you turn down 180£ for a days corn cart be it 8/10/12 hours only come jump on tractor when combine fires up ?
biggish farmer near here offered a lad who does maintaince in local factory that to corn cart while his lad at a wedding and cash in hand and fed
his answer was would not get out of bed for that been a sunday
Wait until the poo hits the propeller, I've got a list of people that wont get a 2nd chance if they come looking now after turning down a well paying, interesting, challenging job.

I’m married with two children, so £80 cash would secure my undivided attention 👍🏼

Not fully relevant too the original post but To be fair… in the current jobs market I wouldn’t drive a tractor that I didn’t want too drive and I wouldn’t take a penny less than what I want…
It’s a job seekers market at the minute so employees can afford too be fussy about what they do for work…

You are being a bit harsh and that seat don’t look expensive !!!!

As above it’s a workers market at the moment although I would be as surprised as you? Would agree with others anything within last 10-15 years with air con etc would be fine for me?

what easier than a hydrant every 72 m and all electric pumps
just have 300m to do this winter and whole farm has hydrants
and looking at putting gps rain dancer on the guns so it alters guns and speed auto
That sounds absolutely spot on. Irrigating with good kit is quite an enjoyable job, even the breakdowns, gives the brain a stretch.

our kit is all f**ked and old, I find it less than enjoyable to work with.

Sure there’ll be an expat along shortly to tell you’re expecting too much though

Sounds terrible, pivots every time  :p
Seems to be an employee's market at the moment, that might change though.

I’m affraid employees get what they want these days if you employ em.days of boss telling them what to drive are pretty much gone unless they are older generation.

Definitely a waste of space!!

As long as everything works and has some form of suspension it's all fine .

It's a long day having to go back to something from the 90s / early 2000s with no suspension especially on trailer work but not the end of the world

As an employee if i had the choice of new tractor versus old it would be new everytime so if you are wanting employees it might be that you have to upgrade your equipment. It’s no good telling anyone you used to drive a Ford 4000 and you thought it was the height of modernity because that was then not now.
Back when I was a student many harvest jobs would mention 'modern John Deere tractors' in the advert as an addition to the pay, as it was clearly an attraction. I guess moving on twenty years you would now substitute JD for Fendt.

As mentioned above, its an employees market at the moment, best find out their expectations at interview than be left in the lurch mid harvest.
