BFU

Membership of the NFU does not stop you joining the BFU.

This is not like partisan politics - Id like to think that if we had a cracking good idea and the other farming organisations followed suit then that would be considered as a win anyway.

What would you like it to be?
I’d like it too be what the Nfu should be, actually for farmers trying to make things better for farmers

looks like it has potential so I’m in 🥰

Things have been a tad slow due to actual real life farming. But stuff is getting done - mainly the very dull stuff. There will be news *very soon* and hopefully a better way of getting this news to everyone. Turning a "good idea" into something with actual form, and making sure its done in the proper way while also fitting in everyday lives has been a bit more time-consuming that any of us thought.

I know I've said "just give it time" before, but its so very close to springing to life!

Those who joined up early were inspired by the idea and so have been able to shape the early discussions. Its from these that the real ideas are crystalizing.

I'm excited you're curious about the aims. Were looking into how we can better keep non-members informed of what's going on. What would work best for you - updated website, an email newsletter for those interested but who aren't members, or perhaps a phonecall from an existing member?

Have you looked at the BFU section on the forum recently? There's an update there on what the next step is, and as that next step is pretty much happening in 5 hours. Id hope there would be a more solid chunk of info coming out to members this week. I do have my Red Tractor audit tomorrow which may slow me down a bit. Improved communication will be addressed.

Its feeling like a bit of a drawn-out labour at the moment but its going to be very exciting. The early flush of excitement met a bit of a brick wall of paperwork. Its a fine balance between rushing out something vs taking ages to "make it right".
All I was really looking for is a link to a website that tells me what you are all about. Nice and simple so I could decide if it was for me or not. I did go to the section on tff but the only links I could find were to join. I'm maybe just a bit early and will wait and see what develops. Best of luck with it.

First thing the BFU should do is put together a petition to force the politicians to debate BPS in the house.
SFI and elms are an obvious farce and aren’t even close to being operational.
Bps cuts should be delayed for at least 12 months and a petition would be a good start.
The fact NFU haven’t started a petition is ridiculous

Have you joined?
If so, make a suggestion in the BFU section - it's as simple as that 👍

BFU has come about because, as you say, existing organisations didn't seem to fully represent many of the things farmers want. So rather than doing nothing, we decided to do something positive. Make it happen.

Lots of boring procedural stuff at this evening's Steering Committee Meeting, but now we can action these necessary things, then get on with the job of working for farmers.

Simple, initial, one page website, with quick overview thrown together of what the British Farming Union is. The info will evolve a little over the coming weeks as we nail down the values, vision and mission statements.

We've had to make things happen, so through the BFU forums, members were invited to join an initial Steering Committee.

Any member can start a discussion to debate an issue, and policy will be member led, member focused, and devised democratically with appropriate use of voting.

£10 to join and make a difference. We are quite determined.

If anyone is thinking agriculture needs this... then join. We are going to make a difference.

Work we've been doing over past 18 months got Red Tractor to say they didn't think grain needed to be assured to enter feed mills. Quite a thing for an assurance brand to say!!! See link...

We've also been instrumental in AHDB axing the £250,000/annum payment to Red Tractor.

That was a few of us working together, but not able to say we were representing anyone as such. We want to represent farmers and their wishes/views.

We're all volunteers, and it's a lot of work, but we feel we can make the positive changes which should have been made by other representatives, but haven't.

Of course, like the NFU, it will require members to get off their arsed and get involved. Not just paying subs and the complaining the organisation doesn’t represent them.

Just saying…

Unfortunately there are 'lots of first things' that the BFU should be doing ! What that tells us is that the existing organisations just aren't performing for British Ag .
We can only achieve 'lots of things 'if we have 'lots of numbers' and 'lots of people prepared to put in some time and effort'.
I encourage everyone to join up ......spend a tenner and see .......rather than wait and see before deciding to part with a tenner . .....numbers count !

BFU .....
a group met a couple of weeks ago to have an informal discussion on the way forward .

An interim Chairman has been appointed so that the organisation can move forward .
A steering committee has been set up and the first meeting will be tonight .

There is / are a group of members who have been doing a huge amount if work behind the scenes in order to make sure that everything is done in the correct manner. The initial steering group is made up of principally the founder members along with a few others who have shown a desire to get involved and help it move forward .
The view of the team is that in possibly 6 mths time there could be an 'election' for the committee to move forward .

Any one who has paid their £10 joining fee is eligible to look on the BFU site and put ideas forward or just view what's going on .
Tonight's agenda is available to members to view on the BFU site but we are glad of any useful constructive comments .
The organisation is in its infancy and it will be a long hard slog to get it to a 'place of recognition' in higher places .
There are contacts being made within Westminster to make known what it is about and hopefully there will soon be a 'mission statement ' as to who we are and what the intentions are .

It's a bit like eating an elephant .....one bite at a time .!

It would be easy just to sit back and do nothing but here we have a real chance to invest a tenner into trying to get a better voice for British Agriculture.

please bear in mind that this is all being done by farmers who are already busy in their everyday life and therefore things might not move quite as quickly as some would like ........but ....we are moving forward .
i'm a member who are these people can't find any info on it could be me not looking hard enough but is it a secret already
