Sounds like profiteering to me.... :(
Surely if the police insist on a doctor’s signature it should be a fixed price across the country of no more than £50, even if the doctor needs to check your notes first before signing as he/she doesn’t know you from the next person as you haven’t been to the doctor for years, how long does it take to type your name into their computer, check your notes and sign form 🙄

He used to sign my photos over lunchtime on the shoot for me when that was the thing to do.
I did send him a message asking what to do, hoping he would say don't worry I'll sort it. He said he wasn't sure as they hadn't had to do many at that point, so to email the surgery.
They said it would be £120, and had to go and pay up front.
I then said to the GP at the next shoot that I thought it was way over the top, and that another surgery in the area was only £30.
He just said that the doctors were not happy about having this responsibility forced onto them and they didn't really want to have to do it, and they felt like they were going to be used as a scapegoat for when something goes wrong.

The form doesn't ask for their opinion, just what is in your medical records.
They can't charge to release your records as they belong to you. Firearms medical only charge about £60, so ask for a copy of your records and get them to do it. That way they will have to do more work for no money.

My shotgun certificate renewal pack arrived in Nov 2021, all completed and sent off early Dec 2021, it expired end of Jan 2022.

After the expiry date came and went and allot of toing and froing, eventually my application was completed in March 2022 (the phone interview)

I was told my certificate would arrive around June 2022.

On the 1st of July and no new certificate arrived, I contacted the firearms department of or local police, the response is below.

"Hello, the backlog is now, at least 10 months, the HQ office are dealing with certificates due in September 2021, I fear there will be another few months before they reach January 2022 renewals."

WTF !!!

No, I did ask, as I'm likely to need cartridges soon, the response is below.

"I refer to information sent to you earlier this year, cartridges can be acquired from a friend who has a certificate, but not purchased. Due to the backlog the issue of temporary certificates has been suspended in an attempt to save time by reducing bureaucracy, but if you still need a temporary certificate, let me know, by email."

Guide on Firearms Licencing Law.

"A shotgun certificate is not required to
possess or acquire shotgun cartridges containing five or more shot, none of which exceeds .36 inch in diameter. All ordinary shot cartridges are covered by this description.

However, a shotgun certificate (or firearm certificate authorising possession of a section 1 shotgun) is normally required to purchase shotgun cartridges.

In other words, get a certificate holding friend to buy them for you, and you are acting lawfully

I received a letter from the police to show to anyone if asked. My cert ran out but as id applied 12 weeks before the expiry date i was allowed to use the official police letter and keep my guns. New cert took about 16 weeks from me taking all the documents direct to the police station to new one arriving in the post.

Took dads to the official police station for firearm and it took them 2 weeks to move it to the actual firearms team not allowed to go to that office as its a special. This then meant we missed the license extension cutoff despite it being recorded in police hands in time........

If they have received your renewal application BEFORE the expiry of the old one, then yes.

Humberside was they needed it something like 3 months before the expiry of your old one to get an extension or you had to put your guns on another license or in a gun shop.
Our local Police only send renewal docs out 3 months before, you then have to sort the Doctors certificate etc, which can take 2 weeks.

Our local Police swore blind they had never received mine, until I checked and found they had drawn the cheque on the 12 Dec 2021, which was in the same envelope as the application !!

It does state in the renewal pack NOT to return it unless everything is completed.
Yes but when we rang them they said get the form in and the medical can catch up, no form in no extension which is what happened. Also it was confusingly worded where the medical went. Ours went straight to them from the doctor not us anyway, so us waiting for it was pointless 🤦‍♂️

seemed a lot of confusion as it’s the first time a medical was needed for a renewal
