Churches and farming

Hmm. Haven't looked it up, but was the word we pronounce as Yaweh was really ever recorded in full? Something about the encoded nature of the Hebrew writing system that leaves out vowels which might inadvertently let the reader think or say the Deity's name?

I didn’t learn Latin, but have sung enough to know it distinguishes between o and a sounds. Yowe for Jove, because the Roman god was not called Jave? 🤷‍♀️
Was this non-use of vowels perhaps how the name Jehovah came into being ?

It's been an age since I read about it, so may well be wrong, but happy to be corrected ~ something rings a bell about that being the name of, in effect, an ancient weather god from when pre-Abrahamic peoples had several gods? Sorry, bit too under the weather to use a search engine, today. It's a good not-a-name for the Deity, although best not to know how it's really pronounced. If that makes sense.

"under the weather "? Fighting covid - or summat ? Quick recovery wishes anyway . We had a lecture on the subject, from the headmaster at the grammar school so long ago now . I probably wasn't taking any notice then , and never really thought about it since . Aramaic from 9 yes 9 centuries BC comes to mind , but far too intense for my thinking just now . Let's just leave it at that !

.....but if they don't devote themselves to what's said in Acts 2:42 then the decline will set in ......and here is the problem ...too many 'devote' themselves to 'what they think should be taught' rather than what the Bible says should be taught .
Thriving Churches are ones that teach the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth !

....just my thoughts ....dad used to say "Christian denominations are like breeds of cattle ...all act and look different but all got a purpose "
Too many worldly things to draw them away ! People don't like to hear the truth !

Have just read through this thread, very interesting. As a practising Christian, I see as many have said, the difference between a church and a building. Church being the community of believers and the building simply being where they meet. Sadly over time buildings have somehow became the focus for people practicing religion and they have taken precedence over the teaching and caring for of the community. Probably a reason why the C of E is struggling, they have focused too greatly on things outside of fundamental basics of christianity.

I understand and appreciate peoples love of history, as I am a history lover. Having been to Rome i marvelled at the great basilicas etc there. However these buildings are not in and of themselves holy nor do they convert people. It is the holy spirit which converts. So in many ways if there is an appetite to save and restore these old churches fair enough but if they are going to be a source of income spend which would and should be used on furthering the gospel then they are detracting from the very faith they are supposed to be supporting.

The route cause of the C of E’s, and other denominations are beginning to do this too, is to not teach the bible but to teach what they think people want to hear, that leads to a wishy washy environment where nothing thrives.

In answer to the op, no I believe a practicing place of worship is not a shop. It can and should be a community hub but not a shop. If said building is no longer used for worship then I don’t really see an issue.

Heard on the radio this morning that our local Salvation Army are providing free Christmas meals on Christmas day for anyone needing it . OH went to offer help this morning so we are taking 3 bags of spuds on Sat morning and gonna peel them .
My Father recently showed me his Will for the first time.
I was surprised to see a sizeable donation to the Barrow branch of the Salvation Army and I asked why.
He said when he was 10 he had meningitis over Christmas and at times it was touch and go whether he would pull through. The Salvation Army came to his window and sang carols and said a prayer for him. 56 years later and he is still grateful for the love they showed.

Carols in the pub tonight. Probably 100 in out of a village of 240 people.
Fantastic evening. What life is all about 👍

Be careful, very careful with bequests to the Salvation Army, I've known of three, all were claimed by National HQ despite being intended for the local corps Dad's uncle left them a piece of land, National HQ pointed out that everything is theirs. They hung on to it for 20 years hoping for planning permission, finally gave up and sold it. A few miles away a house and half a dozen building plots was left to the corps a man had attended for 80 years, they didn't see a penny all went to HQ. There is something in their rule book that makes this happen.

Interesting, thank you.
