People have a short memory, a fine week and its called a drought!
1st week of july was wet every day but then sun comes out and i must admit you soon forget!

Plenty of quality grazing here on the heavier land.

Here in Devon we had floods on xmas day 2021, since then we have had just two days of steady rain so it has nothing to do with just 1 fine week of weather but in fact the lack of rainfall the last 7 months which must be the lowest on record for hundreds of years in this part of the world!

As an aside i saw some 3rd cut silage on a dairy farm today, would be 12 acres of grass down and if they get 12 bales from the whole lot they will be very lucky, it was last cut 6 weeks ago!

It always burns around you every year thats why the dairy farmers in that part of Devon are Autumn calving and grow maize. 🙄

Very dry here, 3 weeks plus since any moisture which was just a few hours. When you walk over grass here now it rattles and snaps like walking over dried out leaves. Chucked a fag onto the lawn last night and it caught 😬

It is always amazing the difference around the country.
We have had no rain since early May and now everything is brown and burnt.
No unusual for this but what is different is the lack of water in the ditches which is a major issue. Last time it was like this was 1976.

Fortunately there is plenty of fodder.

think we are at about 45mm since begining of March, of which 25mm came in one day in late May/early June I forget, the rest has been 1’s and 2’s that burn off. Most hedgerow ponds are now dry or about 3/4 empty.

Didn’t send any lambs yesterday but apparently back 25-30p,

Strange that as most farmers around here calve all year around!

And no more Maize is grown around here than other parts of the SW!

Very rare for the streams/rivers to be this low and we certainly have not had the rainfall like this year and we certainly do not burn up like this every year!

Funny I can think of a dozen large units around Crediton to Tiverton that autumn calve due to being burnt up from June to September.

The diet of these units would be predominantly maize and whole crop while the grass would be fed as spring flush early turn out or as standing hay while dry.

If cows are housed all year round due to milking with robots,I can think of 4 off top of my head, then yes they would calf all year round but in no way again reliant on summer grass growth. It's too dry as you have stated earlier.
