Aye? I’ve never organized any trucking in the past 10 years for under 4.50/mile.
Depends what you are hauling, where you are and the distance its going but yes, the reefer/box van spot market is awful at the moment. Too many trucks for the freight. People are packing up but not enough to fix it at.

A lot of farm stuff is one way, no backhaul so $4,50 a loaded mile could be $2.25 all miles plus the original deadhead to get the load.

We're only forecast to hit 31 for an hour tomorrow afternoon. The highest temperature ever recorded locally was 31.5 and that was back in 1976. It's never been over 30 here in my lifetime. Sometimes coastal farming has it's advantages, it is very dry at the moment though.

Monday 30 degrees + from 11 am to 10 pm, peaking at 39. Above 21 all night. Tuesday above 30 from 10 am to 8 pm, also peaking at 39, but at least there is a good breeze forecast then. Seriously worried about abortions, we had several last year as a result of 30 + temperatures. Start calving in 3 weeks.

I don't envy you one bit, I'm still in week 10 of service and I can't see many cows getting in calf even at our lower temperatures. We're also cutting some wholecrop today so we have a 40m x 15m pit to uncover and re cover today.

We had our first abortion over the weekend, with that said it could well just be our “usual” one or two that we normally end up with. Predicting 32 here so will be getting the shed ready and leaving the gate open for them to come back as soon as they want. Dry cows need moving but they’re probably in the best spot so bale of straw in the trailer to keep them full will have to do.

we had some very heavy rain last night, for about 5mins, if l hadn't heard it, you wouldn't know this morning. Didn't see that, in the forecast.
Wednesday rain, is now looking less likely, according to the idiots, that pretend to know. Practical knowledge, tells us heat waves, usually end with some massive thunderstorms.
Thankfully, we live in an old stone house, and it stays reasonably cool, all day.

End of lactation now so averaging less than they will give in an am milking.

Just the potential SCC blip is the worry really as two of the sides are for sale at some point😬
Oh I see, so only 40 litres ;)
Think I'm right in saying that initially scc will double and then settle down to 1.5x original scc
Ie, if you're at 50 now it'll go to 100 and then settle at 75

Talking to a local friend yesterday and the vet had advised to stop serving for 2 weeks and also to re-check any recent PD's in a few week's time as embyro losses likely. That's fine if this is a 'one off' heat wave but if we get a few more like this in August then plays havoc.

In Italy (Po Valley area) they have horrendous problems with fertility due to heat stress especially as it is also very humid which increases the stress. At least so far it is low humidity here although the breeze has gone.
