Yep. Lost too many ha this "Spring" when we finally had enough rain to germinate the Wild Bird mixtures, 3 weeks later, mostly all dead. :(
I have one block that has still to germinate anything at all, one block that is green in patches but is probably just fat hen and one block that has greened up well but may just be wild oats... :cautious:

Lots of barley and osr cut around us over the last 2 weeks and now some wheat as well. Think I must be missing something though as lots of stubbles have been ripped up or ploughed. Diesel is £1.10/litre and wearing metal prices doubled yet lots of people are out there carrying on as normal. Ploughing alone must be in the region of £35/hour just in fuel costs without thinking about labour, metal and machinery replacement costs. Asked one chap about the ploughing and his reply was ‘needs to look tidy doesn’t it’.
Yeah hold off doing much but we need to get crops in the ground this autumn it's not unknown to get 2 wet weeks in August and not turn a wheel

@agricontract has been doing it for a number of years and managed to harvest it. Needs to be in early though.
Yes 4 time this year only not harvested once but didn’t matter totally transformed soil structure this year I cut barley on 27th June and drilled summer barley on 28th June
If you go on Twitter or YouTube and put in #summerbarley you can see it all

Probably, keep going until everything’s broke
Once young gun is qualified and i can get the 60 % grant on a direct drill i will give it a shot but no way will i sell the ploughs
Normal wet backends are sure to return and early drilling brings bydv so its best to have the option of plough and combi .
New drill without the grant wouldnt be a runner though on my small acreage !!!

They are tools in the box as far as I'm concerned. As with so many things in farming it all depends on the circumstances on the day IMO. Sometimes I've changed my mind about what to do on the way from the house to the yard. Never say never. I'd never sell our ploughs either. They are all ready to go if needed, but whether we use them and where depends on circumstances as they unfold.

A large farm down in Dorset are drilling spring barley off the heap into winter barley stubble and hoping to combine it in oct . As friend and manager of the farming company said if fails what the heck . It could be late whole crop or even green manure . Nothing ventured nothing gained , got to think outside the box sometimes and try if only just to put your mind at rest ..
I think you have to get it in and germinated by the end of June. I did some first week of July once, and it grew alright but didnt set any seed/grains.
