Topping OSR stubbles?

I’ve been wondering if there’s a benefit to topping OSR stubbles to aid residue breakdown and reduce slug habitats.
We shallow cultivate and min til drill into OSR stubbles but often have to run a topper over the tramlines, and when doing so, thinking is it beneficial to do the whole field?
I know it was commonly done in the past, but is is done so now?

Used to do it before ploughing

We have cut our osr as high as possible but we will drill it direct with a disc drill. Idea was there will be less residue. It’s pretty horrendous to walk in and you risk being spiked in the rubbish in some bits.

Even direct drilling into tall osr stalks, a lot will be run down, and by that stage shatter into little pieces.
Never have I seen such a waste of time, diesel, and effort as topping osr stubbles.
looks like ive wasted my time and effort ,but each to their own I reckon it helps breakdown and will end up with a firmer seedbed which this year saving moisture at sowing could well be critical

Thinking about it, as I've said before, the long term view will invariably be that we should look to what people do to establish crops in other parts of the world and end our obsession with burning quite so much diesel and find drills that will cope with this stuff. Nature can rot down an entire tree given time. A bit of stood up stubble should pose no issue to our drills and it may even shelter the from or hinder pigeons or something.

Used to dd straight in might give the osr stubbles a rake or two to kill slug eggs and spread the trash a bit but topping is a waste of diesel they will break down with cultivations and drilling etc . Just a cautious note don't let your dogs run about in them as we know they are like spears .
