Timing of harvest is critical to success!
If you harvest too soon - content and dry matter will be lower reducing yield and feed value
If you harvest too late - Overall digestibility will be reduced leading to poorer quality feed. Successor crops will be sown too late, impacting on establishment and crop performance
But if you get it right - You will have a crop at the target dry matter and optimum starch content combined with highly digestible fibre for high yields of good quality feed. And you will get following crops established in good conditions.
Monitoring crops is key to harvest success
Walk crop regularly from early September assessing plants from across the field. Monitor dry matter in the stem and grain development in the cob.
