    Truck running costs

Good point, could possibly do that to save on the tax, any idea on fuel usage for the 18t compared to a 12?

    Truck running costs

Neil, this is no laughing matter.... :) In hindsight those Lleyn ewes running with those rams I bought off you were probably much more sensible. :ROFLMAO: However, this is a supertanker now and not that easy to turn round... however, strangely and much to my surprise, I'm really enjoying...

    Truck running costs

Currently running a 7.5T horsebox, which is cheaper to run than the Disco & trailer it replaced, however we're looking at moving to a larger lorry as it's become apparent the 7.5 isn't big enough going forward, a 12T would probably do but 18T would be future proof and I'm only really planning on...

    Horse box value

Recently sold a 2010 IW for £3,800, not sure what a Bateson is worth but seeing as it's a bit newer I'd say similar, maybe 3 - 3.5? They seem to have gone up like everything else recently.

    Lorry insurance

I'd have to dig out the policy, I just asked our agent, who knows us personally and knows our requirements, for cover, its for our own use, we don't move anything with it for hire or reward so not sure if it's classed as business or not.

    Lorry insurance

I'm paying £477 including recovery on a 7.5t horsebox with NFU, no hire or reward work though.

    Shepherd huts & alternatives

Yes I kind of agree, I'd rather a nice static caravan and charge for the week but probably won't get planning for it, I'm guessing a Shepherds hut @ £150/night would give you a little more income than a static over a normal week but you have probably 2 x the purchase price or more (lots of very...

    Shepherd huts & alternatives

I've thought this, it makes me nervous so won't be rushing into anything and it will be a single unit most probably not going to go down the route of lots of pods or anything like that. Nice little cabin by our lake should be enough, was thinking of just starting the planning process this year...

    Shepherd huts & alternatives

Looking at the potential for buying a Shepherds hut or similar, what are the alternatives? Can't really get my head around pods, they look small, not keen on the Geo-domes, what else is there out there? Tried bell tents and don't want to go back there... How many nights do people want to...

We're on clay which is mostly good grass growing land, which is great except I'm renting that out! The bit I was thinking of is a fenced off outcrop which is rocky, loads of shelter, dry areas and a couple of boggy areas, plenty of grass, probable too much for a few head but I usually graze it...

Not more horses! :) I would like to scratch the bovine itch again, in whatever shape it comes in, I do miss cows.

With the amount of tourists we've got here at the minute, I'm sure we could sell boxed beef relatively easily, however like you point out, the costs involved would probably blow it out of the water on the scale we'd be talking about, probably better to concentrate on the hobby / holiday park...

Must admit I do like the look of the longhorn, big cattle though, not sure how they would fare on the area I've got in mind.

Showjumping is as expensive as you want to make it, which would suggest it could be not so expensive doesn't it? Sadly that's a lie... a big hairy bare faced lie. I was soooo close to getting rid of the money wasters* for good last year then lock down happened and they re-discovered the shiny...

Thanks for that, what would they make selling to the hobby market? Roughly what would a steer or heifer return when selling on a boxed beef basis? PM if you prefer.

This is the battle I'm currently engaged in... which is why I'm looking for a viable alternative! Still, I lost the battle where the horses were concerned so I'm obviously waaayyyy too soft so don't be surprised if you see me posting pictures of hairy coos in 'today at work'...:censored:

Bang on the money there Neil! Although with only 30 cows & 100 ish sheep previously, I wasn't a 'proper' farmer in most people's eyes even then! ;) But I think a couple of cows would definitely put me firmly in hobby territory...

I like Herefords, but like the Angus, they are on the verge of getting very mainstream and competitive, I know I would seek out the best I could afford, its just how I am and I cant help it! So would probably end up with unsuitable cattle for the plans we have. I'm renting my land out since the...

Not really planning on showing Highlands if we go down that route, I'm going to get her a couple of baby beef fatstockers to show. The highland thing goes against the grain for me having imersed myself in ped lims & blues for years, I loved the Angus I bred for the last 5 years of breeding...
