Straw in the swath, auction results 2021

Conversion of straw to soil organic matter is quite inefficient by the time the bugs breaking it down have all breathed out a lot of CO2. Other methods of increasing soil OM are much more efficient e.g. root exudates from a high yielding crop. I have spent years returning straw to my fields and...

    Groundswell 2021

@martian just thinking that as we will all be inter row hoeing soon would it be a good idea to plant some spring cereal super late on a plot so it would be the right growth stage for demonstrating hoes at groundswell 2022? Would be usefull to see them working side by side............

    Groundswell 2021

Awesome event .Best ever. Vibe was fantastic. Atmosphere in the earthworm arms was like the good old days in the college bar at Harper in the eighties. Only trouble was i bumped into so many people had virtually no time to attend seminars!

    Groundswell 2021

In an ideal world we would go on the motorbike and sleep under the stars in bivvy bags but i cant sell that idea to Helene so looks like it will be in the car and a two man tent with air mattresses....:(

    Dr Christine Jones

Both good points . I often shoot myself in the foot by retaining straw and then ending up with sub optimal establishment of following crop which is lower yielding and adding less root exudates than a high yielding crop established after straw removal .........on the other hand as Richard 111...

    Dr Christine Jones

Problem with straw is that the microbes breaking it down are all breathing out CO2 hence net gain of OM to soil system is less than might be expected compared with root exudates which are converted into soil OM much more efficiently.

    Winter beans

Last year Tundra winter beans planted in the same field as Lynx spring beans on the same day yielded about 1 t/ha more than the springs. The winters stayed green longer either through (a) They were slower growing and matured slightly later or (b) They got less rust than the Lynx and stayed...

Question: What's stopping more farmers practicing silvoarable/agroforestry?

Would only ever do agroforestry or Hedgriculture in strips running North/South for that reason.

Question: What's stopping more farmers practicing silvoarable/agroforestry?

Have been trying to set up a wide spaced agroforestry trial for about 5 years but estate owner doesnt want trees planted in the middle of an arable field so a no go. However, how about rows of hedges or willow or hazel coppice ( have posted about this before ; have called it Hedgriculture )...

    Straw and DD

Reduction in N use as the fifth pillar of Regen. Ag. ?

Ouch ! thats a bit harsh........Am also trying to reduce my use of Glyphosate. Have spent most of my farming career ( (45 yrs ) on the industrial Agriculture Hamster wheel but when it starts to become obvious that in the course of running our Ag. businesses we are degrading the environment and...

Reduction in N use as the fifth pillar of Regen. Ag. ?

_Philosophically i agree with you but back in the real world we are never going to convert worldwide Ag. to 100% organic ; would destroy the niche market and meet too much resistance from mainstream ag. My interest is in creating major environmental improvements by moving a lot of farmers...

Reduction in N use as the fifth pillar of Regen. Ag. ?

Maybe i wasnt clear . When i say reduce N inputs i am meaning synthetic N. Obviously all natural N sources are good and even synthetic N up to a point becuase you are using it to grow bigger , higher yielding crops that are photosynthesising more . Trick is to use it at a level that does not...

Reduction in N use as the fifth pillar of Regen. Ag. ?

Most people seemed to have agreed that Regen. Ag. is underpinned by four main pillars : -No -till, -Continuous soil cover via cover cropping etc, -Building diversity through wide rotations ,companion cropping etc, -livestock integration. How about adding a fifth pillar of aiming to reduce...
