    There has been a massive upswing in pig prices in China, owing to resurgence of various diseases, apparently the Chinese are planning to restore export licences to the processors in the UK that lost them. So we might just be starting to see the tide turn. With the upcoming fall in production...

    The UK's biggest integrated producer/processor was Danish owned (by Tulip, ultimately a producer's Coop.) That was sold to JBS, a Brazilian/US outfit that owns rather a lot worldwide.

    SPP doesn't include the processors own pigs, or "premium" pigs (organic, RSPCA Assured etc), just standard pigs. However, it does include the pigs that are overweight and end up going for 70ppkg deadweight. Apparently, just one lorry load of these, per week, is sufficient to drop the SPP by 5...

    Oldest machine on farm, dead or alive.

    1956 TE20, petrol/paraffin. I borrowed it from my father for 18 months when I started out in 1987. I now have it for mowing my lawn with a Wessex finishing mower.
