I can’t help on store cattle feeding but for those that can, perhaps an ME value would be useful too?

How do I breed my own wool shedders?

Wow! Your eyesight must be even more dodgy than mine. I started putting a small red dot on lambs’ rumps as I r7ng them this Spring, for exactly the same reason. I’ll know my eyesight has deteriorated further when I need to start spraying stripes over them...🤐

Where’s you then? I’ve been stuck in the shed working with sheepies all afternoon, so not been keeping the usual eye on local goings on.

Get your pheasants off my land!

To be fair, the ones I see hopping round here every summer, missing a leg, must be pretty wild about it...

Get your pheasants off my land!

We have a self-keepered shoot here, who think they own the place despite only having 'the right to take pheasants from the woods'. They are being very generous with their wheat, putting it in a few feeders to spread the pheasants around the place. I checked in one of the feeders the other day...

    MTD deadline...

Codes that are necessary for Sage are one of the reasons I dislike it so. I discussed things with my accountant when setting up on my own, who tried to persuade me to use Excel spreadsheets (which he was going to let me have), but I opted for Quickbooks instead. I think I've asked for their help...

Wow! You must have the only farm business that is completely independent of commodity prices and weather. Fair play. (y)

    Calciject no 6 discontinued

I've only ever used the Red Top, at 60-80ml/sheep, as above. It has a small amount of Mag in iirc, but if a ewe is down with staggers, I'd give her Magniject instead. I've never felt the need to give glucose to those cases tbh, but would give a prop glycol drench if I did. I keep a bottle of...

There is no comparison at all. Dipi is a moaning bint that would do any sane man’s head in just as soon as his attention moved away from her cleavage. Kylie, on the other hand, is a goddess, that acquired a very mischievous twinkle in her eye after spending time training with Michael Hutchence....😍

How do I breed my own wool shedders?

Only if accompanied by tear drop eyes surely?;)

    MTD deadline...

Accountancy is good, once you’ve got used to using it. I know exactly how far in the doo-doo I am at any given point, just by looking on my computer, as well as what’s going out when. In theory accountancy should be cheaper if they are just checking it over and then calculating & filing a tax...

    MTD deadline...

I registered this morning, which I hadn’t done before as it stops you using ‘non-compliant’ software. I’ve been using Quickbooks on a PC since 2012 and get on very well with it. The last desktop program I bought was Quickbooks Pro, costing £85 in 2016 iirc. It does everything needed to file VAT...

Latest news on livestock EID proposals - is the majority of the industry "in complete agreement"?

EID tags are a great management tool (where they stay in), but that doesn't mean they should be made mandatory across the industry. I would probably continue to use them in my breeding stock, but to suggest they improve traceability is just nonsense thought up by desk jockeys. Slaughter tags...

    MTD deadline...

Quick update on this. I received a letter from HMRC last week, telling me that I need to register for MTD for my next monthly VAT return, or they will apply penalties. By my reckoning, I've saved 15 monthly subscriptions since the date of this thread, and hopefully allowed them to sort out any...

    Teaser ram removal

That depends on the seasonality of the ewe breeds ime. When we ran Texel crosses and the rams were going in on October 12th (for March lambing), if I didn't tease then they weren't cycling naturally, so next to none were tupped in the first 10 days or so. Using teasers as above, everything was...

    Any ideas?

Sheep on it for 2 weeks and you still have clover like that? 😲 I would suspect Mag too, but only as it doesn’t look typical of Ca deficiency, CCN, etc. Clostridials are covered as best you can anyway if 2x vaccinated. I wouldn’t be paying for a PM personally, if it’s the first/only one, but...

iirc the brain glows under IV light with CCN....? I’ve never seen a case of CCN present like that though.

    Teaser ram removal

Yes. He’ll have done his job now, getting them all cycling ready for when the entire rams arrive. At this time of year, my teasers move from one mob to the next as we go from stimulating pedigree ewes, to synchronising & marking ET donors & recips, to the main mob of commercial ewes, the ewe...
