Our cattle keep on top of it, especially the water dropwort which they've grazed out in a few places.

They need to be re-tensioned and blades re-aligned annually when they get a bit older / more beaten up.

    Virtual Fencing

GPS and telecommunications are handled different in each country. It will take some time to scale to all countries, the technology it still very young. E-sheperd (former Agernsens) was only bought out by Gallagher a few years ago. They have been developing and testing the technology for a long...

    Dismantling slurry chambers

Does anyone have experienced taking out slurry chambers? I'm putting a roof over this so it's not needed and i wanted to re-use them elsewhere. I didn't install them so i don't know how difficult it would reverse the installation process or if it's best not to bother to avoid unsettling the...

    Hedge trimming

For wildlife / nesting birds: Leave it to grow out until its 2.5 meters wide and then trim one side every year. Make sure there is a decent grass margin with long grass, flail in September. Have different hedges around the farm at different growth stages.

    Wilding

You would think like asbestos those closest would be the most impacted, but each humans genomes is unique in it's own way to how it is affected. If ingestion is the method through food and water then that's everyone affected. I went to the war museum in Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam) where they have...

    Poorly cow. Advice please

Had a cow that produced 2 calves like this in a row (we stopped breeding from her). vet reckoned it was neurological and didn't always express itself till a few weeks old, if it can't at least rock itself with some slight effort to right itself it's not worth keeping. There's a danger that it...

    Acorn poisoning

Touch wood we've never had acorn poisoning as we graze some very large oak wood pastures with longhorn cattle. They do eat them along with conkers and other poisonous plants like water dropwort but as long as it's not making up a bulk of their daily intake they seem to be ok.

Situation Vacant Head Stockperson - Conservation suckler herd

This is a great opportunity to play a key role in the development of the current large pedigree breeding herd of English Longhorns for projects, including carbon sequestration/storage and biodiversity gain. The herd ensures extensive grazing in one of England’s most prestigious conservation...

    Back from the dead?

Could just be a food coma or deep sleep, they tend to be a bit dozy at that age and take a while to get moving. If you are worried feel it's belly to make sure its warm, take a temperature, check that it's feeding and that once it's up and moving check it's body language to see if it looks...

    Knepp castle before Groundswell?

An increase in predators would suggest an increase in food sources. Seeing as Knepp is probably one of the most studied and recorded sites in the UK it would be interesting to see what the data shows.

    Knepp castle before Groundswell?

Pat has done a great job with the Longhorns and they're well adapted to the land. If you're going there with a farming hat on remember that what they're doing isn't farming, it's using livestock to manage the land in that respect. The place is teeming with life.

FUNKY FARMER MORE RUBBISH FLYTIPPED ON HIS LAND?

We have to take it on the chin as a charitable arm of a large organization. We're 3200ha of publicly accessible open space in an urban area so it's hard to police, the majority is builders waste and soil from cannibis farms and we sometimes get the joy of expensive clear ups like asbestos and...

FUNKY FARMER MORE RUBBISH FLYTIPPED ON HIS LAND?

We just prosecuted someone and they were fined £1k and given a criminal record, the person had dumped 16 black bin liners of rubbish on our land at night and the only evidence we had to go on was an invoice in the rubbish. It's the responsibility of the person who's rubbish it is to ensure it's...

Sustainable Farming Incentive - Pilot Information (including PAYMENT RATES)

As someone who conservation grazes i would agree that this is not written for your average farmer who makes a livelihood from livestock. Within the context of balancing production, profitability and ecological benefits it needs to be recognized that regenerative / holistic grazing is the most...

    Monbiot changing direction?

You can't compare the UK to anywhere in Asia or India, take a country like Vietnam that doesn't have councils and household bin collection services, they've always put their waste into rivers and animals pre-plastics which which would have broken down naturally. They are continuing to do what...

    Groundswell 2021

Great event @martian. Due to work commitments i could only make the second day but it was worth it and great to bump into people i hadn't seen for a while.
