Farmer protest in London, read the comments !

Apparently according to FW. Is anybody going or are we all going to sit on our hands as per normal?

    Hedge rules now law

It’s going to be interesting. On of the major principles of writing a new law is that it shouldn’t discriminate against anyone so they won’t be able to single out farmers. Whilst I agree with you that the vast majority of the general public will be outraged by being dictated to about when they...

    Hedge rules now law

You can at the moment so long as you don’t disturb any bird nests. Once the proposed legislation becomes law then there’s a distinct chance that all hedges will have to comply with similar rules as the old cross compliance. I reckon there’s a good chance you’ll get your hedge cut before the...

    Small Scale Pick Your Own

Location is key. One local farmer, many years ago, had a bit of land near the outskirts of Croydon so he decided to try a pick your own enterprise. It was extremely popular with the locals, so much so that he managed to shift everything he produced. The only slight minor snag was that everyone...

Welsh Sustainable Farming Scheme AND Protests

I agree. I think it just goes to show how difficult it is not to say the wrong thing and loose support. I know it’s easy to say in hindsight but she should have asked the anti farming woman how she would have liked it if the government decided to devalue her house by 20%, and give her no...

Welsh Sustainable Farming Scheme AND Protests

I’d like to see the French farmers reaction to that if their police tried that stunt!

Which hand held grain moisture meter?

I’ve got an old Protiimeter and a relatively new Unimeter. I prefer the Unimeter to use and it’s been very accurate when tested against samples. All the grain I’ve sold has always tested out by the buyers as pretty much exactly the same as I’ve made it.

Welsh Sustainable Farming Scheme AND Protests

I too thought the bit where the lady sheep farmer said that her land would be devalued by £900k wasn’t going to get much sympathy from the general public. It was a bit unfortunate because she was otherwise doing quite a good job of representing the industry. The woman who said that Welsh...

    New toy day

I’ve got a 6810 and it just hangs on forever, 65% torque backup when we stuck it on a dyno.

    Times Leader

This^ is the theory. Everyone seams to conveniently forget that some bright spark thought it was a good idea to inject ammonia into vehicle exhausts to reduce emissions, I wonder if that has had more of an impact than emissions from a cow pat travelling hundreds of miles.

There’s no ULEZ charge on a tractor.

    Another closing

It was on the local BBC news today ( South East Today if you want to search for it on iPlayer ) followed by the tractors blocking the roads at Dover as a second item of news.

UK Farming Protest - Start organising...

Better coverage on South East Today, you can probably see it on iPlayer. Also it starts about the local council and port authority thinking of taking the government to court over plans to move the checking of lorries to Sevington, 22 miles from the port, in April. The lorry drivers were against...

The truth about SFI/ GFC [as I see it]

I had this conversation last week with someone who’d done a LCA ( life cycle analysis) on 100 tonnes of prawns comparing them between producing them in Scotland and Ecuador. Apparently the fuel used in shipping them came to a very small amount in comparison when allocated to the 100 tonnes just...

SAM2 Mulitspecies cover, who is doing it and what's your plan?

It’s very unlikely that the buckwheat will still be around until February, it disappeared a couple of months ago in my cover crops and at the beginning it looked 100% buckwheat when you drove past. Phacelia also stands a big risk of not making it through to February, I’d choose both of them in a...

Will No till put paid to the plough ? asks a piece in the FT.

It doesn’t surprise me that you had poor establishments from direct drill demo’s and I’d totally agree with you that it’s perfectly possible to increase your soil biology by ploughing plenty of stuff back in, especially manure. However I would dispute that switching to direct drilling was...

Will No till put paid to the plough ? asks a piece in the FT.

Ploughing bad black grass or brome fields isn’t a bad idea, I’ve done it once or twice but I had the view of never ploughing it again. I think if you plough on a 20/25% basis it might not be successful as you’ll be digging up the seeds you’ve buried. The late Jim Bullock had a field that he...

Will No till put paid to the plough ? asks a piece in the FT.

I said that there wasn’t a soil type that couldn’t successfully be direct drilled and that any failures ( including all the ones I’ve had ) are always down to management and not soil type. I didn’t say that I condoned ploughing. You might have very valid reasons for doing it such as not having...

Will No till put paid to the plough ? asks a piece in the FT.

Yes, or the police. I don’t get and never have had a subsidy, it’s one of the things that concentrated my mind on making it work. It’s also the reason that we’ll see increasing numbers of dd failures.
