Can't say which years but there were a number of years they were around that price probebly about 10 years ago but happy to be corrected. Was'nt worth sowing then but now is a different story.
Not long ago. Think i sold feed barley at £80 / tonne 3 years ago. A lot of arable farmers will only chop 1 or 2 years because it isn't realy good long term.
For me its about getting the right balance. No point keeping large numbers if it's costing too much in bought in produce. Most farms in this area have a plough, drill, and a combine . Just a case of keeping it going longer. Of course there are a lot of areas that this is not an option.
Sorry didn't mean to come across in a bad way. Just trying to point out that people just can't afford to pay these high prices and won't in the long term. We all have to make decisions. On my own farm i could easily plough up 25% / 50%. And grow spring barley / oats. Even at 2 tonnes / acre...
I am by no means an N F U fan, but they were absolutely right to try to encourage people to bale the straw. The livestock of the country could of been looking at disaster. No disrespect but some arable guys seem to have an unrealistic value for it. Livestock producers can't pay this and systems...
