    Floor eggs

We are PYO fruit growers, and for the last 4 years we sell eggs from an egg machine. We keep the flock 18m and have two 500 bird houses, so we have double production in summer to coincide with the fruit. We have just stocked, and they are starting to lay, but we seem to have plenty of floor...

    I admit, I have a workshop tool addiction :-)

All of the above. Plus my habit of leaving a tool on the machine, and driving off to work.

I found an unused tool cabinet second hand, and spent a very happy hour organizing it. Part of a tidy shed / tidy mind project.

    New farmer

The key to this sort of market gardening, is both the marketing and the gardening. The technical ability for this sort of production is extraordinary, there’s a lot of details to pay attention to. And then you’ve got to get it to your customers. There would be quite a bit of investment in...

Tips for helping to keep a man on a small farm

I share my man, he works with me Jan-august for the fruit season, then the rest of the time at the olive mill. Years ago, seed cleaning I came across a farm that assembles fencing panels to pick up the slack times.

    what grinds your gears

Why have they got their swords on the right hip when they've got their shields in the lefthand?:scratchhead: This is correct. They drew underhand, rather than across their body, so keeping the shield in place. The sword, à gladius, was used for stabbing in close quarters. Tacitus makes no...

How would George Henderson get on today?

I was very receptive to his ideas. His concept diluting fixed costs through greater output, rather than greater area, coupled with hard work and relentless attention to detail. I have little doubt he would Succeed in todays Britain, but for many more, less driven, would be new entrants there...

    Poly tunnels ??

My tunnels are skinned along the hoops, rather than along the length. The ends are buried. The sheets overlap so you can ventilate. I also don’t dig and run permanent beds, topped with a lot of compost, then cover crop in winter.

    Terriers

When I was a manager one of the keepers on the neighboring estate had a jack called Reg. He used to run forward of the beaters and lie in wait on a track. He would then be well placed to have a go at any deer pushed forward. In the end the keeper had to leave him at home as it upset the paid...

    Terriers

I had a jack like that, he started retrieving all by himself, we never even discussed it, he just copied the other shoot dogs. He’d even get teal from the river. He held them tight though! I always think the presence of a terrier on a shoot makes them fly better, somehow the birds sense the...

    Terriers

Mine loves a snake, they hide under the plastic ( biodegradable) in the tunnels. The lab won’t look at them, but the jack goes straight in.
