im working on the basis that dairy x blue heifers calve down just fine, mine did to hereford, i did have to pull a few but that was because there tight at the back rather then the calves being big, ive always found British blue calves pretty small
You reckon 25% blue in the mix of the calf over a salers heifer would give any trouble?
I wouldn’t want to say I’m competent but I can’t see it being an issue, I’d be more concerned if the blue genetics was in the heifer then in the calf .
looking for a BB X bull to cover salersX heifers, want to add a bit more shape but keep easy calving, if the dam was Saler would be ideal, Hereford or maybe even BSH would be second fiddle.
Been a while since I been on the forum, it’s not all good news though 😬.
@Wolds Beef the bull settled in nicely , kids renamed him ‘red lightning’ and he was lovely …. I say ‘was’ because last week he decided to jump a gate and didn’t make it all the way across 😑.
We’ve just started...
had a calf born this morning with no eyes , seems a decent little calf, was up and suckling but no eyes inside the sockets .
I haven’t had any positive BVD results “yet” so id like to assume that’s not it, I’m going to get the vet to come and test just to make sure; the cow was a Holstein and I...
just an update on how I got on, i bought a collar , put on 2y old salers bull, didn’t work, assumed it must be a faulty collar, sent it back for a new collar, by this time it was winter so bull was in shed with cows and I started getting texts and thought it was working , Out of roughly 70...
JP1- yes one of the XP type with a bit more backend on it, presumably they lose some calving ease because of it.
bluepower- ive no experience with char but they are prone to big calves and difficult calvings? i have seen the yellow X calves though and they do look cracking. if i go down the...
long story short, me and my father used to milk dairycows, were lowland farm, east midlands, we stopped milking for various reasons but rather then sell the herd i retained our britishblueX & herefordX heifers and AI'd the dairycows with sexed stabiliser and salers semen in our last year to give...
anyone using the 'moocallHEAT' for sucklers? the one with battery collar on a visec bull and ear tags that texts you.
Can steers be used to detect heat in cows like visec Bulls? or do they lack the consistency & drive a bull has to do the job? only reason for this is we are closed herd &...
since im in the midlands im somewhere in the 'middle' and an ideal place to create this super herd.. so if everyone would send me there perfect cow i'll look after them for you at my place ?
I might of mislead a bit, the only ‘pure’ Hereford I have is the bull and plenty of Hereford x Holstein but I have wondered why if so many people say BFxHE were the best why there using something else when they grow there own replacements anyway.
The HEx heifers sold very well , much...
I did wonder if it more a case of ‘because every dairy farm had BF x H heifers for sale’ that they was best, would someone pay more for BFxHE then the surplus of HolsteinxHE , I don’t know.
For me growing up doing the relief milking the only difference I noticed when our farm started to...
