Northumberland County Show - local knowledge needed

I did't know where to post this - so here goes. Local Knowledge needed. We are going to be in the area and thought it would be a nice day out. We won't know anyone but considering getting a membership so at least we could sit down and watch the main arena events. And - what is the food like...

Environmental Mangagement scheme - stupid question

This is really stupid, sorry. My question is - are we going to get a booklet through the post that we can sit down and read about all the options. As opposed to seeing it on a computer screen? OH is simply NOT going to sit down at the computer to study what is offered.

    Where hedges used to be

Back in 1980s my OH removed 2 hedges to make a 40 acre field. Looking from a distance it is possible to see exactly where the hedges were, I don't mean marks in the soil, but where the newly sown wheat comes up first. In an approximately 10 acre patch in one corner of the field it is all up...

Field into trees - not yet

So we have the rented field for another year, as the owner can't buy any trees to plant this year and will have to wait until next autumn.

Solar one side, woodland the other side.

Just heard this morning that our landlord of 30 acres wants to take it back and plant trees. Slightly annoying, but we haven't had it for very long. Wonder if he will get the same from woodland planting grants that he had from us for rent? For him, it probably isn't about the money as he has...

    Central Heating Wood Outdoor Boilers

I noticed an advertisement for Central-Boiler Ltd, an outdoor wood burning central heating boiler and wondered if anyone has one/knows of any. The importing firm is based in Essex and the boilers are from the USA. I wonder what the difference is between a straw burner system and this wood...

    No pheasants from France

Just had an email from the Countryside Alliance, which confirmed some things I had been hearing, that pheasant chicks can't be imported into the UK this year. There is a local game rearer who normally has 1,000s and employs quite a few people during the summer months so I'm not sure what they...

    Accounts/VAT software

The accountant uses Sage, which I don't like much, after years of doing the accounts and VAT on an excel spreadsheet. My son says that he should learn to do the accounts (as I won't be able to do it for ever!) but would really like to have a programme that has Farm Management as well as just...

    Rain Harvesting system?

Who has a rain harvesting system? The local Water Board is offering grants, but little interest shown in this house so far. We have 4 sheds plus a huge grain store, so there would have to be one collection from every shed, so how does this work? I know there has to be a filter to stop debris...

So who else got Covid from the NFU Conference

Or maybe it wasn't from there?

Annual rent offered for solar park?

WE have been approached by a firm wanting to rent a field for solar panels. Apparently it is the only one on the farm that is suitable, due to the necessary power cables being close, whatever. Obviously, any agreement would have to be checked by a Land Agent dealing with these things, and...

    Heritage Railways

We had all better take the children/grandchildren on the local steam railway this Christmas, as where will they get their coal from in future?

    I'm getting a bit afraid now ............

First light on Saturday we were trying to locate 40 plus cattle that had, I won't say escaped, as "let out" would be correct. We did get them altogether again after they visited the housing estate - didn't like that so came out again, were on their way to the village playground but we managed...

VAT on rent for a livestock building?

There isn't any VAT on the rent paid for a building to be used for livestock and forage is there? Although it wouldn't make much difference, since the farmer could claim back the VAT if it was charged.

    Wild Flowers

Is it legal to dig up and replant wild flowers on your own land? We have a patch of woodland bought a couple of years ago. It was planted by the previous owner under a 25 year grant and I can remember it previously as a bit of a scrubby paddock. So there are basically no wild flowers growing...

Large commercial chickens not fed soya?

So when the subject of Climate Change comes up, and the rainforests being cut down to grow soy(a), it is stated that most of it is for feeding to pigs and chickens. Just for interest I did a bit of searching to see if I could find a supplier of chickens that does not feed their chickens soya...

    Planting Trees

We had our little booklet this weekend. My son's reaction was "who would plant trees on an arable field worth around £8,000 an acre that produces a crop every year, and put trees on it that reduces its value to £4,000 and there is nothing to harvest for 25 years." Discuss
