If anyone is looking for a complete starter kit I will have one for sale in June 24 - going back to sync AI so no longer needed. Only two years old in perfect as new condition. Tank with 6 compartments in a lockable plastic box. Thermostat controlled thawing flask. Straw snips, tank ruler...

    Experiences of following GS3

We currently use GS3 (allowing grass to go to seed overwinter for winter bird food) between the first and second year of two-year ryegrass leys - and as our main crop is to make horse hay in June this works really well. The payments are very attractive and it does seem to work in all ways! This...

Cut or graze AB8 (Flower Rich Margins & Plots)...?

We get a lot out of AB1 and AB8. AB1 you have to mow half the plot area in the spring - I guess to extend the flowering period - we do this when silage making and put it in the clamp as it’s full of clovers, trefoil and Sainfoin. The clear up cut has to be made after 15 Sept - if this is a...

    Cattle and slugs

We did that this year, spread pig muck and then drilled oats and buckwheat into OSR stubble which came up well with the volunteers. Grazed it with suckler cows and calves to remove around half of the above ground biomass. Drilled wheat behind it with a Claydon. The wheat looks good (apart from a...

    Germination of desiccated oats

I have some oats I could use as farm saved cover crop seed, but they were sprayed with glyphosate before harvest (bit of a late idea!) Has anyone any experience of how much the germination is affected by glyphosate. Is it completely dead or just a bit risky? Would upping the rate be a fair...

    Cover crop costs

This year our winter cover will be vetch, radish and Phacelia mixed with home grown oats - works out just under £30 a ha for the bought seed (from Kings) plus about £3/ha for the oats.

Some game cover I did for a neighbour, leaving tramlines and a foot gap in every row before anyone asks. Found moisture and cut in beautifully with hardly any disturbance, apart from the bout markers!

We have had no issue with stones getting in the discs and/or stalling the discs. I think what has happened for us, where there is a lot of stone and perhaps because our soil is not yet in the right condition, the discs ride over the stones and then the drill is more inclined to crab. Conditions...

Honestly, it’s a very well built drill and a good design. We’ve encountered some difficulties with crabbing (on rolling hills) and inconsistent seed depth (on stony ground), I think this is because we’ve jumped into disc drilled no till straight from a plough/min-till system and I don’t think...

Is the liquid fert from Weaving? Front mounted tank? And can you remember how much it cost? Thanks

Another thought if the disc arrangement is the cause is to rearrange the coulters. Either losing two and spacing them out or maybe put 4L 4R on the front and 5L 5R on the back. But that’s easier said than done around the frame.

I think you have the same drill as us? 3m gd toolbar on the back of a trailed caddy? We’ve had similar issues and think/hope it’s to do with surface tightness on soils only recently put under no till management. Ours will pull straight on reasonably steep land and then move a lot on lightly...

I’m considering undersowing a small field of spring barley with sainfoin, trouble is the sainfoin wants drilling in mid/late April. An idea is to drill the barley now at half rate and then drill the sainfoin into the barley when is at 3 leaf (with a GD). Has anyone done anything like this? Will...

Did you use in front of the GD and how did it go? I’ve got a GD and think this might help!

Anyone tried or got a Grange machinery LD subsoiler

Did you have this demo? Would be interested to hear how you got on with it - in the same situation, looking to lift before the GD.

How much, if any, weight would you guys put on your caddy wheels? Trying to sort out crabbing, any other advise gratefully received.

    Hi Protein Forage Crops

I’m sure it is possible if you get everything right. I went to see James Evans, who has one of the best Stabiliser herds in the country genetically, to look at his stock bulls in the spring - he has gone organic, partly by request of his landlord, but now is very convincing on what can be...

    Hi Protein Forage Crops

It’s definitely the future! We were originally making silage and grazing all on permanent pasture and supplementing with home grown barley and a protein pellet. I’m increasing the cow numbers so I can use all the pp for grazing and make (better) silage from leys in the arable rotation (and...
