Is there a better place to source wood shavings for our broiler chicks in the brooder? Currently buying at £10per bale retail, its a bit of a killer. Right now I'm thinking best plan would be to buy a couple pallet loads at the start of the year.
Thanks
Just had some ungelded swaledale rams dropped off at the farm this week, they're at 30-35kg currently. What rough price per head would they be worth?
Thanks
I'm going to check the upcoming York machinery sale, amongst others, for a used hammer mill. In the mean time, could you recommend anywhere else to look?
Cheers
I'm looking at storing roughly 4 tons of poultry feed for the coming spring/summer months.
Apart from a purpose built bin, what would be best to store it for minimal condensation and longevity?
Seen a few people build a small silo from plyboard, seen others use ibc's previously used for non...
We are considering putting in an off on a small farm, now derelict for nearly 10 years.
Hopefully the attachment gives more details if you'd like to see.
Main points are:
The price of the farm reflects its development rather then agricultural potential.
23 acres of good grazing land.
Farm...
I run a small flock of broilers during spring and summer, usually raising them on organic feed then selling finished birds direct to customer.
Retailing my birds helped absorb some of the price increases this year but I can't see the point raising any broilers next year if feed is the same or...
I'm looking for a 'good' accountant, one that does the essentials but goes a bit above and beyond with advice to really bring that tax bill down, being able to suggest any grants or schemes that might help too.
My current one is fine, cheap and cheerful but only does the bare minimum and isn't...
Im looking at buying some lambs ideally under 25kg to fatten and butcher myself for retail.
With spring lamb sales usually not offering anything under 35kg, and store lamb sales not until the back end of the year, how best could I go about this?
Cheers
Looking at making a race once lambing is over. Just wondering what is the normal width and height companies like ritchie and rappa etc make theirs?
Also if any pics can be shared of yours for a bit of inspiration!!
Cheers
I've been in talks with a local estate agent about 3 fields, totalling roughly 50 acres.
External fences are good, as is land, largely permanent pasture (15 acres dedicated silage meadows) with spring or streams in each field, no buildings.
To begin with the land lord is prepared to offer...
I'd like to cell graze a 35 acre field, which stretches over 500m in length and rises 60m from one head land to the other.
For water, it would be great to be able to run MDPE pipe from the top of the field down to the bottom, branching out along the way down, fed by an IBC.
In the real world...
Just wanted to ask while this years lambing is still fresh in the mind.
My flock lambs outdoors in May, this year, despite giving them several hours to bond first. I found it hard catching the ewes once they had lambed,
I would either catch lambs, have her follow me into a pen, or failing...
For foot bathing the flock I'm using a portable 10ft race with corrugated sides.
Mostly goes well but theres a few spring lambs or old ewe that once in, will try back up and hold the job up.
This is normally solved by me kneeling and shoving from behind. Its effective but I'm not always fond of...
I'm going to take 20 easycare wethers to an abattoir in a couple of weeks time, hopefully before it gets too busy with Eid.
They're either bang on a year to 14months old, I should of taken them in much earlier, but thats for another post.
Avg is currently 70kg however weights range from 45 to...
Please could any recommendations be given for good insurers to have a look into and get some quotes?
Looking at general farm insurance, but also selling meat boxes direct to customer.
Cheers
Guessing it must vary on situation, but what would the best time for tagging lambs?
Would it make sense to hold out as long as possible for ram lambs due for slaughter, compared to ewes lambs that will be replacement breeders?
I'm currently looking for an EID stick reader and compatible flock software to help manage my flock.
Its a small starter flock of 30 breeding ewes which I'm hoping to grow to round 150-200, with ewe lambs as replacements and ram lambs sold direct as meat boxes.
Would a stick reader (rather...
