For lamb killing years, 1981 would win for a lot round here. A big blizzard on 18th April caused carnage in the hills. Folk were filling tipping trailers with dead ewes and lambs. Took 2 or 3 years to get numbers back up on some farms.

The weather on the lamb’s backs isn’t exceptional, but it’s what’s underneath them that’s causing a lot of the problems. We have plenty of grass, but mud everywhere. Wherever a sheep lambs, it turns round a few times and makes it black, then the lambs are plastered with mud. If they manage to...

    Any swallows yet?

Probably around 200 flying around the lodge next to us today. Just passing through though, they won't be in our yard for a week or two yet. Weather was terrible when I saw them, there can't have been many insects, they were flying very low.

Spotted one flying over the lambing fields this morning, just passing through. Lodge next to us usually gets a few early ones.

We’ve been using them for on the low ground, got up to 2shears lambing now. I have the bright ideas, brother finds all the faults. This is one breed that he still actually likes. Not too big, good mothers and plenty of milk. And quieter than the cheviots that they’re bred from

Big ewes and anything carrying plenty of flesh is a strong trade. Leaner sorts are best hung onto at the moment

Seems a shame to bring them down to paddle round a wet field to lamb, they can always find some shelter on the hill even on a night like last night. But we lose too many to predators when we try and lamb on the hill. This one beat me to it when I gathered.

From a distance they looked healthy and a decent size but lean. A month on some spring grass would have made a world of difference

I had two blue bulls in at Gisburn yesterday. I thought they were just a straight trade really, one at £405 and this one at £470. Just under 6 weeks.

    Sheep being shot

I knew a lad who used to pour melted wax amongst the pellets in a shotgun cartridge for shooting foxes, he said it would kill at a fair distance, if he managed to hit them. Never fancied trying it myself.

    Today at work

I did better than I expected. 3 Angus bulls and a Blue heifer, £290-£330, averaged £303. All just under 6 weeks. 👍

There’s folk round here planning to claim for herbal leys. They have been told that as long as they keep the receipts from the contractor to show what they have drilled in, they should be alright if it doesn’t take. I was told yesterday that RPA are just starting to inspect the first round of...

Is that the propylene glycol? I asked the other day, and all they had was propylene glycol in a gallon tub, which we already have for cows, and the small bottles which are mainly propylene glycol plus a few extras.

They wait until the application window is closed before they can work out the threshold score. Last year we received an acceptance email on 17th July, the closing date for applications was early April. The cut off score for acceptances was 42, but that could be different depending on the number...

When the MMB lost control of the milk market, we decided to stay with the coops because we thought it was the right thing to do. Milk Marque, Zenith then Dairy Farmers of Britain until just before they went bust. That decision will have cost us £100,000 and more, and we’re not in a big way. And...
