Hi!
We had a second hand parlour installed into our building. It's a tandem parlour 2x3. It's a high line but as we're just starting up, I'm only milking a few cows into a bucket rather than using the milking line. As such, the milk doesn't need to travel up to the high line as the bucket is...
Hi All!
Our second hand milking parlour has *just* been successfully installed. The installer told me that he used 19.5mm (internal diameter) milk tubes (connecting the milk line to the clusters) because we have a high line. I thought nothing of it at the time...
I've since tried to source a...
I'll switch the cold rooms off when we milk - it'll only be for emergency power cuts in the future...
For now, its only job is to power the vacuum pump and variable speed controller
Thank you - which grant would this be?
I think that inverter needs 3 phase already? I sourced one from Drives Direct but at a cost of £6k, I might as well be a new single phase vacuum pump.
So... I've decided to get a generator to power my 3 phase vacuum pump as I only have single phase for the next 6 months.
Thereafter, the generator will serve as backup for my 4x cold rooms (we age cheese and charcuterie + chiller & freezer).
However, I'm having struggle sizing the generator for...

This is what's on the pump - I think some of that has to do with the variable speed bit?
From my research, a static convertor (cheaper) would be able to start it but not run it. I rotary convertor would be over £1k. This is the same kind of price for a vacuum pump eg...
Thanks! It's only 10 units...
I presume if I can something with the same "litres per minute" it should be fine?
Is it a difficult task to change the motor? I'm not great with electrics, sadly
Hiya!
We are about a month away from our first year of milking and our parlour is fitted - it's a second hand Delaval parlour.
The vacuum pump it came with (DVP2000) is three phase and I only have single phase until October (6 months time)...
In the interim, I considered an...
Hi all, we are raising 6 Large Black guilts in our 10 acres of woodland. They're 35 weeks / 8 months old and they've grown well.
Yesterday, I noticed this growth on the one pig (about a tennis ball size), on her side / just above her belly. Please see attached pics.
It doesn't seem to be...
Hi all, we're just about finished building our new 3x3 tandem parlour!
The last piece of our puzzle is the cow exit and understandings how far back to build the barrier wall to allow the cow to easily make a 90° turn. On the attached drawing, I've highlighted the area in question.
Currently...
Hello All,
We'll be producing cheese in the coming months and as such, we'll have lots of whey!
Our creamery is based on our farm and we will be raising pigs in the woodland. The plan is to supplement our pigs' diet with whey and mix it with their feed to make a porridge.
I was wondering if...
yep...
Obviously a positive net worth is what you're looking for...
The best way to increase you're positive net worth is to keep generating positive cash flows and NOT keep buying assets financed partly by debt as that is a house of cards as @frederick is alluding to.
Yeah, this is true. However, I'm not suggesting to liquidate all assets and just hold cash. I'm suggesting that a key measure a business' performance is how much cash flow you're generating...
Further, not all assets are inflation hedges - land may be. But, machinery and especially vehicles...
Yes, as I noted, your direct costs go up...
And, think it's tough for farmers to be cheesemakers and marketers and salesman but personally I think that's a more feasible way to make a living with lower up-front and on-going investments.
