    Your current weather.

Even the sheep had frost on their backs this morning, with worse to come soon. Nevermind, back to the normal high winds and heavy rain by the weekend :D

    feeding carrots

I don't know if it's of any use, but if you grew your own then carrots store the best left in the ground. If they stop growing about November time they'll still be fresh by March. The biggest predator in that time (if not sprayed in Summer) is usually CRF larvae and getting them out of the...

    Another field drainage question....

I'm trying to improve the drainage on this field, it's clay and gley with all kinds of different causes, remedies and issues. The main question is what do you think is the cause of this wet area between the two dotted lines? Do you think it is the edge of the water table? The pic was taken...

Battling the reeds with goats and ancient land drains. Any interest, experience or advice?

Thanks for the replies, I can see that forming a fence over the worst effected areas for them to concentrate on sounds like a good plan, along with somewhere to sleep and get out of the rain. Whilst there is no doubt poor drainage causes these things, they also grow well in other drier areas, we...

Battling the reeds with goats and ancient land drains. Any interest, experience or advice?

It isn't the drainage which has caused all of the issue, it's more likely climate change. If rain means you can't keep goats then we're a bit buggered in the UK 😅

Battling the reeds with goats and ancient land drains. Any interest, experience or advice?

This is a bit niche, so not sure anyone else here will have done this, but you never know  We've recently taken on a 17acre smallholding on the Pennines. The fields have not been properly looked after for years so i'm working to improve the drainage and convert the land from the invasion...

    What's digging in my field?

Maybe you could rent yourself out, how much would you charge per acre for this service?

    What's digging in my field?

    Water filtration system ideas

The pump in the borehole is just a lifter pump and wouldn't survive if used flat out to serve the house. It takes the water as far as a bladder tank which uses a compressor to pressurise it and send it to the house.

    Water filtration system ideas

No, the filters for turbidity, iron and Manganese are similar in cost. Agreed, there is no way we would use that much, there is a known figure per person for average usage, calculations are based on that + some headroom. What is EA?

    Water filtration system ideas

Do you think those prices are fair for supply only? We do have a recent water test report, that's how we know we're only filtering 3 things. It's a 4 bed house, normally with 2 people living in it, one tap passes 18 Lpm. It does seem a bit of a minefield, someone has just quoted and suggested...

    Water filtration system ideas

Does anyone have any ideas or experience of this? Do you know of any Northern suppliers of filtration systems? We've recently taken on a small holding in NE Lancs which is fed by a borehole. The previous owner didn't go to the extent of fitting a filtration system so we're having to do it. It's...

    Never had it so good!

The modern warm and wet weather brings plenty of problems. On a personal level here on the Pennine moors we have a big midge problem now. We have to cover up with nets like beekeepers on many Summer and Autumn days, never had that 30yrs ago.

Terrible time to buy or not?

It's a good time if you're selling property or anything with s/h wheels on. I bought a used car 4yrs ago, looked after it really well and it didn't need anything more than normal service items, I recently sold it for the same price I bought it for. Bad news for me now looking for a used tractor...
