I've just replaced the filters on my 100hp JD. Prices from John Deere were £376.36, Vapormatic ordered from John Deere were £272.02 and from Nick Young tractor parts £202.84. But the filters I ordered from Nick Young were delivered in a Largo Plant box, so I could probably have saved even...
I know that I'm late to the party - it's a family failing. But can I add an EV fire in the channel tunnel to the list of risks? EV fires are supposedly rare but when they occur, they are exceptionally difficult to extinguish and they produce loads of heat and toxic fumes.
My local council decided to cut once this year and insisted that the contractor used an electric mower. The machine went all black and crispy - but of course that's environmentally friendly.
I've had a similar conversation with a senior agricultural commissioner in the EU who didn't understand that agriculture is seasonal. Also I introduced a (supposedly) highly regarded professor of agricultural economics to a "strange machine", a.k.a. a mouldboard plough.
Don't know about Somerset as I'm in the midlands, but several friends always head north to buy used vehicles as they claim that they are considerably cheaper.
I do some work with insurance companies in claims investigations and so speak to both farmers and the public. I am regularly quite shocked at the negative and often hostile view that people have of farmers. Many seem to think that farmers are just *** nuisances clogging up the roads with their...
I remember the late Phil Drabble fought hard to prevent the KC from recognising the working collie as a breed. His argument was that they (KC) had messed up every breed by encouraging over use of show-winning sires and that the working colly had been bred for two or three characteristics...
I don't know what brand of tractor you run, but as an example, a Fendt 824 Vario is rated at 246 hp at the flywheel but will only deliver 93 hp through its hydraulic system. 208 litres/min at 2900 psi = 93 hydraulic horsepower.
I used to design sugar cane harvesters that used hydraulic motors to cut and chop the cane. The systems generated an enormous amount of waste heat and needed big oil tanks and oil coolers to keep the hydraulic oil cool. Maybe you could fry lunch on the go?? I always wondered what SAE 30 chips...
In every petrol and diesel vehicle that I have had - and there have been quite a few - when the battery fails, it typically has enough power to operate the ancillaries but not the starter. On an EV, that situation doesn't apply. Yes THEY will design out those problems, but THEY should have done...
Its all OK whilst everything is working as it should, but I have heard of several cases where the accessory battery has lost its charge, causing major problems. A couple of months ago, a BBC presenter spent 5 hours trying to get out of his electric car when the door locks and electric windows...
I don't agree that they do no harm. A former colleague was a big wheel in the RSPB and worked on the reintroduction of red kites. Later he told me that he regretted introducing them as people set up feeding stations that encouraged large groups to concentrate in smallish areas - like near...
I just don't understand why the food buying public can't be informed that the bread they are buying today was produced from last years wheat which was grown with inputs that hit record costs. So just because todays fert, spray and diesel prices have dropped back a bit doesn't mean that food...
Ref the Russian experiments on methane production from sheep, the Feed Evaluation Unit at Drayton EHF outside Stratford upon Avon was doing exactly the same research at about the same time, maybe earlier. The local MF tractor dealership (Western Farm Implements) built some airtight boxes that...
I bought a net on Ebay. Someone was cutting pieces from condemned construction site safety nets and advertising them as cargo nets. Wasn't expensive and its been useful
Farmers run exactly the same risk. I've looked at several recent accident cases on farms where the fines being proposed/threatened by HSE were eye-watering. They calculate their fines on a proportion of turnover, not profit.
