I’m researching agroforestry but unfortunately don’t know too much about farming practises themselves. The idea was to alley crop with apples trees, willow trees for bio fuel and then have cereal crop, field possibly potatoes. From what I understand, in monoculture crops the fields are rotated...
Hello, I’m designing a hypothetical mixed farm that is also good for the local ecology. One method is alley cropping, would you need to leave the alley cropping fields fallow for a season or two like with normal crops? If so, how would it work and how many fields wood you need?
Thank you for your comments. Can you please explain why you wouldn’t want the trees dotted about in the paddock? Hedgerows and shelter belts can have many benefits too, do you think these would be better than a wood pasture type cluster planting?
Hi onesiedale, the design is all hypothetical. No particular farm in mind but you bring up another point I was wondering about. I’ve read a lot about rotational grazing and it seems to be very beneficial. Is it common to use mob grazing on parkland type pastures? Would mob grazing he more...
Hi everybody. Thank you very much for all your comments, the common opinion seems to be that alley cropping with trees may not be the best way to go. I’ll now ask what things you have done or could do to improve biodiversity on your farm, that would still work with your current farming system...
I’m a university student in the UK and I’m designing a holistic farming system. I’ve come across parklands and want to know how many hectares of new parkland would support 100 cattle.
Hello,
I’m researching agroforestry and i would like to understand more about farming in the UK. I’m designing a plan for a university project in particular the use of alley cropping. I was thinking of having a cereal intercropped with apple trees in one field. In the other field I was thinking...
