    Today's the day...

If the budgets given by the government were the only income streams you would be right unfortunately most have other incomes as well. Most NHS hospitals get a nice layout for private healthcare, renting out their facilities. They are not the government, they are public services the government...

I do and for a lot of people that are mentioned the government doesn't pay their wages but the NHS trust they work for, or the school that employs them, etc. Civil service is paid straight by the government but public sector workers are not. Yes they have a public service but count the people on...

So there are farmers who are employed by the government because they accept subsidies and other benefits? If you want to know why Sunak is making big things about something ask him

Depends on your definition of food. Which one can provide a meal is most likely not the mono culture, but kg or calories per acre I would bet on the mono culture. As far as birds, butterflies, etc go we need to integrate the verges and probably the hedge into the mono culture.

Two different situations, demanding from your employer and going on strike VS demanding from your government. Politicians don't think beyond the next election and will only do whatever they need to get elected again. People directly involved in farming is a small part of the electorate so not...

    farmhouse electric usage

Whatever you do put multiple sources in. We have oil, wood (central heating and separate stoves in some rooms), and electric as backup. If anyone goes or becomes too expensive we use the others. Relying on electricity here is not possible as the generator has to be powered up several times a...

    Today at work

Damn, how much bird nest material can there be in one chimney. And credit where it is due, had a roofer in as the previous owners had put a slate roof on a little entrance way with only an 11 degree roof pitch. Replaced with metal sheets as one rafter and joist had already rotten away...

What acreage to justify a combine .?

Any crop harvested by yourself is better than crop not harvested due to waiting for a contractor. Check what you are paying for your contractor and if you can take that money and justify putting it towards a combine go for it, but don't forget about all the extras you need as you mention...
