Just come in from the latest stillborn calf, so far 3 stillborn out of 6 calved. Only have 20 sucklers and this year making me question having them. Seems a lot of work and hassle for very little reward.
Managed to get the second stillborn and placenta to the lab for a PM the other day. Still...
Looking for a bit of advice on which bit of machinery to purchase first to do a bit more of our silage/hay/straw making in house.
Just a small place so around 2-300 bales silage, 100-150 bales hay and 150 straw yearly. All done in 4 ft rounds.
Currently we have a 120hp tractor and 70hp loader...
Just sold our stock bull as too many of his daughters in the herd now. What do people do when running a bull with say 20-25 cows and keeping replacements? Change bull every few years? Buy in replacements? Would like to keep the herd closed apart from bulls due to disease risk and don’t really...
A couple of loads away from being finished spreading this morning and our rotospreader lost drive. On closer inspection the big drive sprocket was no longer attached to the shaft. It looks like the shaft just has a keyway in it and the sprocket has a tapered spacer inside it which screws down...
Have two ewes today which either lambed yesterday or the day before, unaided with big strong twin lambs.
Both of them reluctant to get up, eyes half closed, drowsy and not eating. Have given them both 100ml subcutaneous calicject, is there anything else I can do or anything else it could be...
just done the lambs first shot of ovivac, it's looking like i will only have time to do there second shot in three weeks time instead of the recommended 4-6 weeks after the primary jab. Do you guys think the vaccine will still work/has anyone done this ?
Thanks :)
Getting everything ready for clipping the sheep in a few week. What oil do people use for both cutter and comb lubrication as well as the hand piece and dropper?
I had a wee tub of oil which came with my handpiece from Horner but can't find it this year, will any SAE 30 oil work or does it need...
Just found this- been only have been dead for a day or two- any ideas on culprit? Hoping lamb died and then was eaten, really neatly done just legs and skin left and half skull :(
Looking at doing my sprayer training and assessments in the next few months, based in aberdeenshire, scotland. Would like to do the whole lot in a oner if possible e.g assessments the day after training (time of work etc) So far have found tyro training in skipton who would manage this. Looking...
Our cattle BVD tests were carried out on the 5th of November last year.
I believe we have to test every year to maintain our negative status.
Does anyone know if there is any leeway after this date e.g could we test on the 10th of November and still maintain our negative status or do we always...
wanting to shear my ewes on about now, we have had rain all day today!
If it stays dry tomorrow will they dry out enough if I bring them in Saturday night to clip Sunday morning?
Thanks

Been using our set of jarmet chain harrows today , did a good job of levelling some poached ground and mole hills . Just wondering if you are supposed to have the frame/levelling bars off the ground so it's just the mat that's running on the ground. I had the frame running flush to the ground...
Changed the fuel filter on our zetor 4341 the other day as was taking longer than normal to start. Has always been easy to start whatever the temperature. Also cleaned the gauze in the little glass bowl, filters were both quite dirty.
Bled the system at the filter and the pump and started up no...
just crutched out a group of 40 ewe lambs today- and 2 have died .
They were put to the tup at the start of November, had 2 die at the start of December- got post Mortemed and the verdict was pnuemonia ( we do hepatavac ).
Anyway these 2 today seemed fine when I gathered them in, let them...
anyone ever used turf reinforcement mesh? Got an area round the back of the sheds where we would drive round occasionally with the tractor and would also like to store silage bales there, would be a fair bit of work to remove topsoil and build back up again with hardcore :greedy:
This stuff is...
Just had a skinny looking cow blood tested for johnes- came back at 291 so definitely got it.
What should we do now? Spoke to the vet and current plan is to cull her and blood test all the other cows. She is about 3 and has a 6 month old calf, should we get rid of the calf asap as well, can it...
