Just had a look at the diary for 2001, it was the spring from hell following the autumn from hell, none of our neighbors had drilled anything so we took a gamble and bought a 4 m vaderstad rapid, a fairly new concept. We didn't start drilling for one neighbor until May 4, finished on 9, spring...
Drove from Lincoln area to Gainsborough, then over to Bawtry and Blyth, once you are away from the Lincoln edge
things deteriorate fast and I honestly saw barely a single viable crop of wheat, it needs to stop now or god knows what people are going to do.
We drilled one block on August 4/5, then the next lot between August 18/21, two insecticides, pellets and about half had a sniff of N. Seem to have got away with it, only difference is we are hybrid. I think it is down to local populations of beetle and a good slice of luck!!
What conclusions have you come to Heathland? All due to csfb damage? Any insecticide applied? Any difference in variety/drilling date? Its unbelievable that such a great looking crop can suddenly be written off, hellish gamble without nics!
