    Re: Ewe stinking vaginal discharge.

@Bald n Grumpy you didn't offend me at all - you are right - I am new, but I'm also an ex district nurse with an eye (and nose) for infections - plus - having to intervene has not helped. I did get a vet to visit prior to lambing and got all the meds he recommended (also did a sheep keeping...

    Re: Ewe stinking vaginal discharge.

Hiyah, Had to assist an ewe Thursday with twins (first time mum - large first lamb and legs back second lamb), both alive and good size, but mum started to smell. Given metacam and alamycin la, but still very offensive. She is happy, eating, drinking and looking after her twins but still has...

? Heptavac P Plus safe after 10 hours

Hello, I wanted to ask if anyone has used the hep p plus vaccine after 10 hours if it's kept in the fridge and its made airtight - or do you dispose of remaining doses regardless? I haven't done it - as I didn't think to ask the question before jabbing the sheep, but had to waste a lot last...

    Disinfectant for soft ground

Hiyah, It's our first year for lambing and the ewes have just been brought in for lambing but our barn has no solid floor and is on soft ground. We've put straw down for them but was is the best (but cheap!) type of disinfectant powder and how often would you apply? TIA!!!

    Rotovator or similar?

We've just sent our first pigs on the one way ticket, but they did a mighty good job of trashing their penned areas. We want to get more weaners in spring but need to try and sort out the mess and re-seed. We're looking at a rotovator to turn over and sort the ground, but as small holders, we...

    Fair cost of pork?

I understand your reluctance - I raised this issue with the breeder and in the 30 years she has been breeding Berkshires - she has never had an episode of boar taint (and she has published), plus she never sends hers off until 8 months...and I am happy with that record.

    Fair cost of pork?

Hello! Tomorrow I will be collecting the pork from our first 2 weaners. Question - what is a fair price for 2 free range outdoor Berkshires who were 7 month old boars? They were in excellent health, given all care and were not even stressed when we took them on the 1 way ticket. Without getting...

    Regrass pig pen?

Hi, I'm in Cornwall, we are going to open up another section of field to fence off and to put the new pigs in, but we were hoping to 'rehabilitate' the existing pen. So do you think it won't be worth sowing anything until Spring - or is there a magic winter germinating seedling?

    Regrass pig pen?

Hello all, Our first weaners have just left on the one way ticket, but ensured they had totally demolished the pen run prior to departure. We aim to get more weaners in the spring and wanted to regenerate the ground whilst it's empty. What grass is the most appropriate? At present the ground is...

    Poorly pigs.

Hello, I have to 6 month old boars who have always been full of mischief and love their food. But when I went out to feed them this morning they were still in the ark and I had to call them to come out. They came and sniffed their food but did not want to eat it and were not happy at all. I...

    Broken tooth on a yearling

Hello all, I have 6 yearlings who are due to be tupped for the first time this autumn, but when I did the teeth, tits and toes one of them had a broken middle tooth. What if any are the risks because she is in good health otherwise and a good weight, but I do not want to do the wrong thing...

    Combinex on ewes.

That makes complete sense. I used it once last November but not since. I did send FECs off in the spring but the results came back as low, indicating I didn't need to worm them. Knowing that do you think I should use the combinex or chalk it up to experience and just get a fluke drench...and if...

    Combinex on ewes.

Hello - Couple of questions - it's our first year for our ewes breeding this autumn - having had them from lambs last summer. When they were due fluking I was told by the breeder that it was ok to use combinex on the lambs, but not on ewes (which they now are!) - having already bought a bottle...

    Ticks!!!

Sorry - DE is diatomaceous earth powder. I read somewhere that 'a light dusting' of ant killer powder on the bedding would also kill the little suckers with no detrimental effects to the pig, has anyone else heard that?

    Ticks!!!

I've also read that applying DE directly to the pigs is a good treatment for them including their bedding area, has anyone had this experience? Thanks again.

    Ticks!!!

Good evening! I hope you can advise as I'm in my first year of having weaners - a pair of Berkshire boars, and noticed some lumps on one today - so whilst having a good old scratch at supper this evening I noticed there were ticks on his skin...I scratched most of them off - to his great relief...

Ducks don't want to leave the coop during the day.

Hello! We took delivery of our first indian runner ducks just over a week ago, they were 4 weeks old at the time and very skittish - naturally. They eat and drink well, are getting bigger all the time, but are still ultra jumpy and won't leave the coop unless I usher them out or when I have to...
