    Lack of Small Abattoirs

You need to speak to AHDB Beef and Lamb. I do not work for them. I have fed back your concerns to contacts I know there and would urge you to get in touch yourself. I share your annoyance over this.

Cost of living/Living cheaply How cheap can you live?

Same with air dryers (I hear). I don't think anybody really knows how much output the cooker uses and how much that costs. It'd be interesting to work it out for some rough rules of thumb. Our nearest supermarket is 20 mins drive and there is a fuel cost to that. CoOp in the village is still...

Cost of living/Living cheaply How cheap can you live?

:ROFLMAO: You can go too far with it!! It is weird though that you can baulk in the supermarket at the cost of a jar of coffee being £7 but then happily buy a takeaway coffee at the shop for £3. I think we stick things in different budget pots in our head. It is like avoiding at the £10 wine...

Cost of living/Living cheaply How cheap can you live?

There are simple things everyone can do with no real time cost. Some things we have always done. - Do a budget and review it every month. Wife and I have our own accounts and then a joint account for bills etc. If we run tight, we tighten belts. We aim to put some earnings into savings every...

podcasting on what's new in agriculture

It is good to differentiate yourself and find your niche. If being 'outward looking' and 'big picture' is the niche you are going for, great. I think other podcasts tackle other areas. Your challenge will be keeping it interesting (at such a high level) and having enough content with the right...

    Mastitis issues from new milker

I would wager 90% chance of it being environmental and 70% chance Strep. uberis. Another point worth thinking about is stage of lactation of those cows. Are they within 30 days of calving? If so, could be dry cow derived and therefore nothing to do with milking.

    Mastitis issues from new milker

Gloves were my immediate thought too. Also, the order of cluster application. Is there more slurry where the cows stand due to a change in personel? ... i.e. cows sh!t when someone new is there. Does he hurry them out where you don't (causing splashing)? Does he cup up in the same order? Are...

Health and Safety and red tractor/assurance

Surely it depends who has the contract. If the auditor is contracted to RT to audit your property, RT will be responsible for their safety and they would need to evaluate and create a risk assessment for auditing your business. If a contractor is working under contract at your business (e.g...

Cleaning out a tin slurry tank

+1 for checking re breathing apparatus and consider outsourcing the job. If it is full of sludge, there will be gases. Wang me a message if you want contacts of people to check with and come up with a risk assessment.

    U Turn

The bizarre thing was that the proposal of scrapping that band was designed to inject more money and opportunity for lower paid workers . I am just trying to think how many low paid workers are employed privately by these bankers... I could only assume that Truss has gone in to sink the...

Income tax?! :ROFLMAO: ... surely it will not affect many if any at all. This is a year of paying tax through the business, minimising drawings and banking cash for later (in dairy anyway) - assuming there is profit. I suspect many will still make purchases to minimise tax but I'd think that unwise.

Poll : Have you signed up to SFI ?

Sorry, my point came across as negative and it wasn't meant that way. I'm a details person. This thread is interesting as I think the answers are within reach.

Poll : Have you signed up to SFI ?

Wouldn't larger business just change business structure to take advantage of payments? 1000 acre farm is only 5 x 200 acre farms

Your hourly rate when dealing with bureaucracy.

This is a bigger question of how much farmers value their time. I can buy little bales of hay around here for £3/bale if I load myself. I am pretty sure that is them paying me to have it!!

    Milk from forage

To be honest, your far offs should be fine. Many on here would say your close ups are too. I always get worried as intakes can drop to 6-7kgDM/day and you'd never know. If you create allocations, it is easier to monitor. Plenty of folks calve onto standing hay or use calving paddocks and feed a...

    Milk from forage

There are some calcs here: https://ahdb.org.uk/block-calving-key-performance-indicators These KPIs are very simplistic though and worth delving deeper. Tracking your silage qualities is worth doing and changing diets to maintain optimal utilisation. Remember you need to ensile the maize...
