    Store lambs stocking rate

50 acres. 6 fields but would split into 12 paddocks. Old PP but flat and decent ground. How many store lambs could you finish from mid June to 31st October? Obviously depends on weather but rough idea.

    Granulated Lime

Always had ground limestone spread before. Anyone used granulated lime? What are the pro's and cons? I guess it is a more expensive product but surely there is a gain in being able to spread yourself when you want and ease of handling.

What to do with grass keep?

Possibly looking at tendering for 50ish acres grass keep. Mid April to 31st October. Will cut all once for hay/silage (and can only cut once) for our late lactation and dry cows over winter. After that thinking of running either store lambs or stirks, will probably be sold once agreement expires...

    Sealant for silage clamp

What is best to use as sealant where concrete panels meet the floor of a silage clamp?

    Summer Kale

Trying to cheer myself up with thoughts of cows grazing a forage crop in the sunshine. Which varieties are recommended? What is expected DM yield per hectare? Want to graze from first few weeks of July so was thinking to put in late April/early May. Thinking full cultivation to put in as I...

    Calf prices

3 week old Angus and Hereford calves, out of crossbred cows, well reared and will be a decent size for age. How much should we ask? Always do price across the board for bulls and heifers; last year was 120 bulls, 90 heifers. Same buyer for three years, he collects within a couple of days of when...

    SFI from a dairy perspective

Feel like i need to make a decision on what to do with this SFI. What are your plans? There are quite generous payments on offer. I have heard of several local farmers putting everything into SAM3, £360ish/Ha, buying some seed and throwing it around and thinking it's easy money. Even the...

    Tractor stuck in gear

Tractor stuck in second gear, any ideas to try for getting it unstuck without getting involved with the gearbox? Mccormick MC130.

    Soil samples

Got most of the farm sampled recently, pH, indicies and Organic matter. Makes quite interesting reading, P and K indicies are generally 3-4, couple of low K values, around 2, in fields cut twice last year which is expected. Most interesting though is the soil OM. A range between 5.1% and 12.4%...

    Corrugated tin roof paint

Have an old tin roof over our parlour, sound but needs painting. What would you recommend to use? Bitumen or a black oxide paint or other?

    Mccormick MC130 hydraulic oil

Bought a Mccormick MC130 recently, found most things, can't find a sight glass or dip stick for back end oil. Is there one? Feel a bit daft asking but I cannot find it.

    SFI for grassland dairy farm

Finding SFI slightly confusing in terms of its scope and requirements especially for a predominantly grassland dairy farm which is geared towards production. 65 acres, two fields of pp approx 15 acres total, the rest temporary grass in roughly 5ac blocks reseeded on 6-7 year rotation, one 5ac...

    Tyloma/interdigital growth

Preventing and curing lame cows is one of the very few things I think we do quite well. However, I have two cows with Tylomas, they both get a trim probably three times a year to try and take the pressure off it but it really gets to me when it looks like it is causing discomfort. They would be...

    Hay

This is a slightly bizarre and definitely pointless thread but putting hay out yesterday for our dry cows and thinking what a fantastic feed it is; no plastic, no effluent, easy as pie to handle and transport, rumen friendly, cows love it. Got me wondering; does anyone know of anyone still...

    Cow tracks...again

I might have posted something similar before when deciding whether to apply. We yesterday, finally, got our grant through for 450 meters of main cow track, going to put in 200m spur tracks also. We are going to use stone, probably Oolitic limestone. Has anyone done similar? Can you use something...

    June/July calving cows for sale

Group of 8 Irish Freisian cross Jersey cows, average weight roughly 550kg. PD'd in calf to Pedigree Angus/Hereford, calving June and July next year. For sale due to moving our calving block. Average calving interval of the group 380 days. Average SCC of the group 121. No milk meters in parlour...

    Feeding concentrates

Our parlour feeders are knackered. Keeping them going with welding up anything which breaks and filling in gaps but probably got another year tops in them, its a loft with manual feeding and drops of .9kg each time. Not keen on replacing them as I think really long term the parlour will move but...

    New tractor

Next year we are 70 cows, Spring calving. Buffered maize in dry spells and turnips/kale over the winter, out pretty much every day for a few hours. Unfortunately even though we try to keep everything simple we still need a loader tractor, just can't see how it's possible without making life...

    Quad and spinner/sprayer

Anyone get on well using a quad and attachments, particularly spinner and sprayer? We have some steeper ground that we can't spread fertiliser on unless it is dry and consequently it isn't as productive as it could be. Also struggle to get sprayer here on time for 5-10 acres. Thought we could...

    Buffering springs in the autumn

Just interested how many Spring herds have started buffering? I would say this is pretty early and wouldn't normally buffer yet but our yields have dropped in the last 10 days by about 1.5 litres a cow, grass DM is low here at the moment and cows have started going through grass quicker as there...
