Does anyone know what the average national live weight SQQ for this week is please? I have registered on the LAA website, and should have access to daily prices FOC as a market user but apparently this needs to be renewed every month and the website just keeps taking me back to the login page...
Surely it’s not a pay rise if they are working the same number of hours in a week. They will working longer days but over four days instead. I seem to recall Richard Branson trialled this at some of his companies and he found it actually boosted productivity- this can only be a good thing at Defra!
I’m pretty sure the answer is money. I went to a talk where the guest speaker was an NFU bod and unless my memory deceives me, I got the impression that implementation of Net Zero policies was one of the only ways that farmers were going to get any cash out of the Treasury, hence the NFU latched...
Here in the Brecks, the sump just gets packed with sand and you can’t get enough water pressure through the tank to wash it out. I wouldn’t have a sump tank unless it was mandatory...
The ewes were all 6T and older, the first 5/6 pens were in reasonable nick (my guess was that they had all reared singles) and made £98, the rest were on a declining scale of body condition and made £86-£65.
Lambing so far has been a lot easier this year, they started 5 days early but all ok, only had to catch half a dozen ewes to lamb them due to mispresentations/ large singles, ewes are milking very well etc. However I’ve had 10 sets of twins so far where one lamb has been born no problem, got up...
I think half the problem is selling the “wild” venison. Supermarkets only want farmed deer (consistency of product 😒) with red carcasses selling for about £60 atm. These East Anglian reds live on veg and sugar beet so they are quite some size- cheap meat imo.
I am intrigued by the water bowser option, my only concern is that it can’t be Road legal? It has to be a minimum of 2000 litres so surely having it braked would be useful...Not all of us farm in a ring fence so would have to meet a road at some point?!
Sometimes it’s their sodding children that are the problem too. I received a message at lunchtime today to say that two kids on bikes in the village were aiming catapults at my ewes in the village where I live. The field is directly in front of my house and on another side completely overlooked...
I don’t know if it would be of any use to you but if you are on Facebook, we East Anglian sheep botherers have a page... Eastern Region Young Shepherds Group. You could post a message on there to gauge interest? Admittedly there hasn’t been much posted recently- it was originally created to...
It’s the keeper of the livestock (not the landowner) that puts them on their own inventory, there is a section to note down numbers of stock under different CPH numbers. IMO even if it’s a error, it’s better to record the stock on holding by both parties, rather than no-one declare them.
Just...
Being a simpleton myself, I just took Net from Gross. Your right about the VAT, that brings it down by a quid a head. However I take all market fees into account rather than just their “commission” 😉
It wasn’t meant as a dig... I sell both live and dead depending on finish/ breed but I’m...
Is this the same National Trust that has just recorded an annual surplus of £59 million pounds?! You would think they had a few quid spare for a bit of maintenance on their own property..... cretins.

Exactly this... also I wouldn’t want to be on stand by for anything lambing any longer than 40 days. For the sake of 9 sheep, would it be worth synchronising them so lambing time isn’t so protracted?
