Agreed we've a quad in the individual pens at the moment. One of the lambs is wearing a skin with a hogg (success), and one bearly viable tiddler with her. She laid on the only decent one last night......plus she's got no milk coming through so she's going out field with the rest of the culls in...
We switched last year due to the cost of heptavac, and haven't seen any downsides. Bank balance is healthier though.
I can't comment on young lambs though as we don't vaccinate them.
Check with the market you are going to buy from they accept credit cards. We once bought a lorry load of ewes from a market and went to pay on the business credit card ( was a bit stretched and it would give us a month's grace) but they wouldn't accept it. Luckily we had our cheque book on us...
Surely the fresh green shoots and clover growing through would be exactly the same quality as if it was topped? The dead stalks aren't going to be eaten by anything anyway and just look abit rough compared being freshly topped.
We have a horner rambo, which i reckon is great for dagging lambs, shearing the odd one with maggots. Light duty stuff. I keep it on the quad just in case there is any struck as I'm going round.
I think you would get fed up with it pretty quickly if you were shearing more than a few though, as...
This is what I have fashioned up for use this winter. Pretty basic but has been a game changer as can do the field in one pass on my own, stepping in the stakes and clipping in the wire as I go. Done a fair bit of fencing with it over the past 4 months and it's still going strong.
Due to Heptavac going fairly astronomical on pricing we are switching the ewes to Bravoxin/ Covexin 10.
What is the general consensus on following on from previous years of Heptavac? Just the one jab or the full double dose the first year?
We find the best way to get propylene glycol or such stuff into a ewe is to drench the ewe with a calf bag. Mix it in with a good bit of water and helps to keep the ewes fluids up aswell. Much easier than trying to drench with a wine bottle
Could look on PGG Wrightsons auctions page to see if there is any on farm store lamb sales or such like anywhere near your route, quite impressive seeing batches of a couple thousand lambs sold together.
Also check out Fielding livestock market, that was pretty impressive. Walkways above the...
We gave ours a late N this time for the first time, around early September I think when it started raining. The difference between this and last year's crop is night and day regards to canopy, will definitely be doing it again.
