Chitting won't make any difference now, especially in a polytunnel. Can't see why there would be any yield loss unless you break off the chit.
Phosphorus will help increase tuber numbers, although just planting them closer together will have the same effect.
From a farming prospective. India, China, Brazil, Argentina all appear to be supporting and pushing their agricultural sectors for either food security or extra export.

Demand does drop a bit, utilisation rates increase.
Also, growers feel price will go sky high and hold off selling. This creates the shortage short term so prices keep rising, round and round it goes until growers are happy with price/need cash flow/want them away before spring work starts...
Quaker pushed ccc free oats twenty plus years ago with a slight premium. Two difficult harvests brought that to an end. Lots of very flat fields with the knock on of low quality.
I think they just tolerate it now until they can find a replacement/better standing varieties.

You obviously pull yours with a crawler. Would a 250hp wheeled tractor be sufficient? (No terribly steep hills or bogs to get through).
