wierd question I know but has anyone seen a 'willow the wisp' ie a strange glowing light above marshland? just been talking to someone that worked on my land in the 60s and he described seeing this phenomena on a patch of marshland. I've done a bit of reading about it and it seems it was fairly...
Hi, I normally just use straw for bedding down the cattle sheds but have access to a good amount of woodchip from neighbour who is a tree surgeon. could I use some woodchip as well as straw for bedding down the cattle? just to make the straw go a bit further?
Hi, I've left my farm in (hopefully) capable hands and am in the Arctic. The small Inuit community of Pond Inlet on Baffin Island to be precise. Its an eye opener being here! Caribou, Seal and Narwhal hunting is still a way of life up here. No farming at all! I'm waiting for the ice to break up...

For various reasons I won't go into now it looks like I will need to sell some ewes with lambs at foot. Born mid march to mid April mostly, and need to be gone by mid June. When would be best time to sell, now or wait till last minute. Or will it not make much difference?
Thinking of getting a log cabin from one of the companies that does pre fab timber buildings, to rent out as a holiday cottage and possibly for parents to retire to in a few years. Does anyone have any experience of these buildings? Maintenance, longevity, warmth etc? Or would I be better just...

So...some idiot has set up this website to collect stories about irresponsible walkers who have been scared by cows. They are campaigning to ban cattle from fields with footpaths. This would destroy my business and many others. We need to fight this.
Can I move cattle onto my holding on the same day as I sell some? Like if I take some to market can I then buy others at the same market or do I have to wait?
I understand that it used to be possible to link 2 holdings so that cattle dont have to be tb tested on movement. This would be very useful as I have a separate but nearby holding to my father, and we are thinking of farming in a more integrated way but for various reasons would like to keep...
Livestock farm, few hundred acres, lots of hedges, used contractors up to now but now think it is worth doing myself, I have more time in autumn now for one, would like to, and could get on the land when needed instead of having to wait. I have a McCormick CX105 tractor, (102hp), what hedge...
My Sussex bullocks are around 10 / 11 months old, and one is looking a bit bull like, and has a definite lump in the testicle area. I reckon I somehow missed a ball when I was ringing him or it slipped up somehow, so he still has a testicle but no scrotum. What should I do about this? Leave it...
Hi, I'm running out of forage for my sucklers but have barley straw, I'm going to get some molasses to pour on and feed the straw, how many litres of molasses do I need to pour on one large straw bale, and what's best application method etc?
Thanks for any advice
Hi, I'm thinking of applying for a 40 % grant from the countryside productivity scheme for a heat detection system for my suckler herd. I have 40 cows, housed from Nov - march approx. currently I hire a bull in every year but would like to try ai. Any advice on systems etc would be appreciated.

I tried ploughing for the first time yesterday! Preparing an acre or so of pp to make a vegetable /flower plot. Single furrow reversible on my 47 hp Tafe tractor. Was going to get a friend to instruct me but didn't because of the self isolation, so just went at it. And what did I find? It was...
I'm an organic livestock farmer, pretty simple system, all permanent pasture, never grown any crops or even reseeded, never went to ag college, not much arable where I am so my knowledge of growing crops is 0. Now I want to have a go on a very small scale, just for interest, maybe an acre to...
