I would say definately worth doing a CC, but dont drill into it. You need to get it killed in good time before drilling. Either get frost kill or top it off or spray off, but drilling into it I found that the cc kept too much moisture in the soil for the drill to work well ( close Slots)
I have a similar size farm to you and am 1/3 grass and 2/3 cropping. I grow 1/2 of the cropping area as a winter cereal and 1/2 as a spring break crop. I do also have 1 field as a low input spring crop and also 1 field as a Landsberger mix for silage out of te arable area. I used to use a...
Finally got to Groundswell having missed the previous years. Great to catch up with various folk I havent seen in a while and I was very impressed with what @martian and family have achieved. A truly excellent event. I couldn't get there for both days, but will definately plan to do both next time.
Have a look at the Perfect models. I demo'd one and it was good. In particular it had good clearance outside the wheel base. In the end I bought a Maschio one that is also good and ws on a special price but I would otherwise have gone for teh Perfect one. Better thatn the Kuhn.
Just relying on the sharp edge at the moment, but was considering row cleaners. Expensive option though! Advice above suggests I should just cut higher, so will see how i get on next year before making any plans.
I havent done a three way mix before but a friend did it regularly a few years ago and combined it. Worked pretty well. He was certified organic at teh time. I have done two way mixes from Western seeds and they have worked reasonably well. Some years the peas do better than others. It is only...
I would have used round up. I havent had much luck with pre em and felt that when I have used a pre em in the spring with a lot of trash that it didnt work very well and also I thought it stayed on the trash and affected the emerging crop. ( Soya)
The spring isnt a problem, I have taken to doing a light disc after the cattle have grazed the cover crop. It is putting in the cover crop and drilling through the millet residue in the autumn that is the main issue.
There was some discussion in a previous thread on baling straw, but wanted to get further opinions. I have been baling straw since going no till. I use a little my self and have until this year done a straw for muck deal. Unfortunately this came to an end as yet another dairy farm gave up, so...
I put in black oats in my mix and reckon they are worthwhile. They grow to twice the size of normal oats or rye volunteers and are the first thing the cattle eat. Expensive though!
I have moss on my arable ground. In the past I have had a major problem with moss on grassland. The grassland issue was compaction and change of practice and slitting solved it. On the arable side i think it is a consequence of surface capping after the rain, there doesnt seem to be any...
I DD some lucerne into winter barley stubble a couple of years ago. Bit of a risk planting late but most of it came. I used a JD750 which I find good at helping preserve moisture in the summer.
In my experience it is worth either grazing off or topping. When I have drilled through the standing green cover in the spring i have found that the cover can hod too much moisture and it can be difficult to close the slots. In my region if it gets to the point that the cover starts to take...
